no burnt smell, no cracked solder joints that i can see, bell spins freely by hand.</p><p>plugged it back in and the motor twitches weird on arm, like it tries to spin and then kind of stutters and stops. the other three are fine. betaflight shows all four ESCs responding in the motors tab but when i push the slider on that one it just does the stutter thing.</p><p>running a blheli_32 4in1 so i cant just swap one ESC independently which is annoying. could be a winding issue in the motor i guess? not sure if that matters at the 2205 range i was thinking about.</p><p>also im decent at soldering ? ive done keyboard stuff and some RC car ESC work ? but ive never done an actual stack before. is soldering a 4in1 ESC to a flight controller harder than it looks or is it pretty forgiving? looking at alternatives to the usual carbon suspects</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/4008-cracked-my-frame-again-and-kind-of-over-it-looking-at-alternatives-to-the-usual-carbon-suspects/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>okay so this is the third time ive cracked an arm on my current frame and i know crashes happen but this feels excessive. its a fairly popular 5inch true-X layout, wont name it but most of you have probably seen it around. the arms are 4mm carbon and honestly i think the layup is just garbage because ive seen people run thinner arms on other frames and have way better durability.</p><p>starting to look at alternatives and wondering if anyone has actual long term experience with frames in that mid range price bracket, like 40-70 USD. ive been eyeing the Apex HD and also the ImpulseRC Reverb came up in a reddit thread but i couldn't really find many people talking about it recently so not sure if its still even worth considering. mostly doing park freestyle, some light proximity, nothing insane.</p><p>also semi related ? not sure about my ESC choice</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/4007-first-proper-5inch-build-not-sure-about-my-esc-choice/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>so ive been flying whoops for about a year and finally pulling the trigger on a proper 5inch freestyle build. got the frame sorted (went with a TrueRC SOURCE ONE clone from a local shop, yeah i know, but budget is what it is) and im running a F7 stack i picked up on sale a few months ago. the FC is fine i think but the ESC is where im second guessing myself.</p><p>the ESC that came bundled is rated 45A per corner and im planning to run 2306 2450kv motors on 4S. felt like it should be fine but someone in my local group chat said i should go 60A minimum for freestyle and now im paranoid. is 45A going to be a problem or is that guy just being overly cautious. i dont want to burn an ESC on my first real build obviously but also dont want to spend another 40 bucks if i dont have to.</p><p>also any tips on motor order for soldering onto the ESC would be appreciated, ive done it on a tiny whoop board before but this will be my first time with individual motor wires and im a little nervous about it</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">4007</guid><pubDate>Mon, 10 Aug 2026 15:03:59 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>motor screws stripping on carbon fiber ? losing my mind</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/3932-motor-screws-stripping-on-carbon-fiber-losing-my-mind/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>so anyway this has been bugging me for a while and i finally snapped today. third time this month i've had a motor screw either strip the head or just seize up in the arm. im running titanium M3 screws on a 3mm carbon arm and i dont think im overtorquing but maybe i am. using blue loctite.</p><p>its always the same arm too which is weird. rear right. could be a slightly off-spec hole from the manufacturer but i dont know how id even check that. frame is a TBS Source One v0.4 if that matters. motors are just XING2s nothing special.</p><p>at this point im questioning whether i should tap the holes or just get helicoil inserts or something. anyone dealt with this or am i doing something fundamentally wrong with carbon and screws</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">3932</guid><pubDate>Sun, 09 Aug 2026 01:01:12 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>first fpv build ? heat damage maybe?</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/3400-soldered-my-vtx-power-leads-and-now-getting-weird-video-cutouts-heat-damage-maybe/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>so anyway this has been bugging me for a few days. finished up a build on a stretched X frame, running a Rush Tank Max VTX wired direct to battery through a dedicated pad on the PDB. the solder joints look fine to me, no cold joints that i can see, and continuity checks out. but when i punch hard or sometimes just randomly mid hover i get like a half second of video dropout and it comes back. no OSD glitch or anything, just the picture goes to static and recovers.</p><p>im wondering if i maybe overheated the VTX when i was soldering because i was using a pretty chunky iron tip and had to hold it on there longer than i wanted to. or could this be a power issue? its the SpeedyBee F405 V3 with the 50A 4in1 ESC. problem is ive been watching like 6 different build videos and they all seem to stack things in a different order and some people run the ESC on the bottom some on top and now im second guessing everything.</p><p>the frame has those rubber grommets for vibration isolation and im not sure if those go under the FC or the ESC or both. also do i need to worry about which direction the ESC faces relative to the FC because of the ribbon cable length? someone mentioned the brand i wont name here but its one of the cheaper ones and maybe i just need to accept that and spend more on something reputable. but also i feel like 35amp should be way more than enough for what im doing, i fly mostly freestyle not like race gates or anything super aggressive.</p><p>current draw at full throttle measured around 28-30 amps so there should be headroom. the ESC just gets brutally hot and then one of the phases goes out usually. is there something else i could be doing wrong that would cause this or is it just a garbage component situation</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">3262</guid><pubDate>Mon, 27 Jul 2026 15:01:34 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>first real build ? does it actually matter that much for a 4inch</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/3104-carbon-fiber-frame-thickness-does-it-actually-matter-that-much-for-a-4inch/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>been going back and forth on this for way too long. looking at a couple different 4inch frames for a light long range build, one has 3mm arms and one is 4mm. weight difference isnt massive but its there. ive seen people say 3mm is fine for a lighter 4inch and people say you'll regret it the first time you clip a tree. im not doing anything crazy aggressive, mostly cinewhoopish flying in open-ish areas with some light tree gaps thrown in. all up weight is probably going to be around 280-300g with the battery.</p><p>also partially considering the iFlight Nazgul Evoque F4 but its maybe slightly bigger footprint than i want. at that weight and size does the arm thickness thing even matter or am i just overthinking it because ive had two bad arm snaps on my 5inch and now im paranoid about everything</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">3104</guid><pubDate>Fri, 24 Jul 2026 15:03:24 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>first real build going okay but stacked ESC situation is confusing me</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/3103-first-real-build-going-okay-but-stacked-esc-situation-is-confusing-me/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>so ive been lurking here for like 6 months reading everything i can and finally pulled the trigger on building a 5inch freestyle quad. got a diatone Roma L5 frame which seemed like a solid middle ground for price vs quality, and im running a F7 stack with the 45amp 4in1 ESC underneath. thing is i keep reading conflicting stuff about whether i should be running the ESC power leads directly off the battery leads or going through the capacitor first and honestly at this point ive watched like 8 different build videos and they all do it slightly differently.</p><p>i did my first round of soldering last night and its... passable i think. the XT60 joints look okay but im not super confident about the motor phase wires, they feel secure but theres a tiny bit of flux residue i havent cleaned off yet. is that actually a problem or do people just leave it. also im using 63/37 rosin core which someone here recommended a while back, using a Hakko FX-888D so temperature shouldnt be an issue, running it around 350c.</p><p>main question i guess is the cap situation and also whether i need to do anything special with the ESC signal wires going to the FC or if plug and play is genuinely plug and play at this point</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">3103</guid><pubDate>Fri, 24 Jul 2026 15:02:37 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>stretched X vs true X for 5inch ? does it actually matter for freestyle</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/3052-stretched-x-vs-true-x-for-5inch-does-it-actually-matter-for-freestyle/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>been trying to decide on a frame for my next build and ive been going back and forth on this for way too long honestly. i have a tallon stretch x right now and i like it but a buddy keeps telling me true X is better for freestyle because the props are more symmetrical in the airflow or something. i dont fully understand the aerodynamics argument he's making and when i look at pro freestylers they seem to use both so im not sure it actually matters in practice.</p><p>my flying is mostly park gaps and power loops, not super technical stuff yet. weight and durability matter more to me than outright performance at this point. anyone have strong feelings either way or is this one of those things where you just fly what you like</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">3052</guid><pubDate>Thu, 23 Jul 2026 15:02:53 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>finally built my first 5inch but ESC keeps smoking on throttle up</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/3051-finally-built-my-first-5inch-but-esc-keeps-smoking-on-throttle-up/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>so ive been lurking here for like 6 months watching builds and finally pulled the trigger on putting together a 5inch freestyle quad. went with a dead cat style frame i got off aliexpress, hyperlite flowride motors (2207 1900kv), and a 45amp 4in1 ESC stack i grabbed used off someone local. everything seemed fine when i bench tested it at low throttle but the second i really punch it the ESC starts smelling and once actually had a tiny wisp of smoke come off one of the corners.</p><p>i checked my solder joints and they look ok to me but im not super experienced with a iron so who knows. battery is a 4s 1500mah tattu. im wondering if maybe the used ESC is just toast or if i did something wrong. also not 100% sure i have the motor order right in betaflight, could that cause this? not electrically, like the actual screws are vibrating loose. happened twice now and once i nearly lost the quad in a tree because it just went sideways out of nowhere.</p><p>im using the stock screws that came with the motors (BrotherHobby Returner R5s) and the frame is a TBS Source One. already tried tightening them down hard but it keeps happening. someone mentioned threadlocker but i heard you can use the wrong kind and then you can never get the motor off again. is blue loctite actually safe for this or what do people usually do</p><p>also wondering if its a vibration problem rather than just the screws, like maybe my props are unbalanced or something. one of them did take a pretty good hit a few weeks ago and i just kept flying it</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">2919</guid><pubDate>Mon, 20 Jul 2026 19:06:28 +0000</pubDate></item></channel></rss>
