betaflight on an F7, emax motors, the usual stuff. gimbal is out of the question on a freestyle rig obviously but im just talking pure image quality here. the rolling shutter on the Phoenix 2 is noticeable in fast rolls and i've kind of accepted it but watching some O3 footage last night made me wonder if i've just been tolerating something i dont have to.</p><p>anyone made this switch? driving me crazy</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/3455-gimbal-drift-on-my-air-unit-setup-driving-me-crazy/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>so ive been dealing with this for about three weeks now and i cant figure out if its a calibration issue or something hardware related. running a <a href="https://amzn.to/4wcREYQ" class="affiliate-link" rel="nofollow sponsored noopener" target="_blank">DJI</a> O3 air unit with a custom gimbal mount i printed, and the horizon just slowly rolls to the left during longer flights. not like instantly, it kind of creeps over maybe 5-10 minutes into the flight and then holds there. its subtle but you can def see it in the footage.</p><p>ive recalibrated the IMU like four times, redone the gimbal balance, even swapped the ribbon cable thinking that might be it. the gimbal itself is a fairly cheap two-axis unit so maybe thats just the answer and i need to accept it lol. but thought id ask before i drop money on something better. anyone seen this kind of slow drift before or is it just a trash gimbal situation</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">3455</guid><pubDate>Fri, 31 Jul 2026 01:02:26 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>anyone actually using thermal payloads for anything other than inspection work</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/3424-anyone-actually-using-thermal-payloads-for-anything-other-than-inspection-work/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>curious what people are actually doing with thermal cameras on drones outside of the obvious stuff like roof inspections and powerline surveys. ive got access to a FLIR Vue Pro R through work and we barely use it for anything creative. started thinking about wildlife monitoring stuff but im not sure the resolution is really there for anything useful, its 640x512 which sounds okay but at any real altitude the thermal signature of a deer or whatever is pretty small.</p><p>also wondering how people are handling the gimbal side of things for thermal, most of the mounts i see for FLIR units are basically just shock isolation plates rather than actual stabilization. wondering if thats good enough or if anybody has figured out a proper <a href="https://amzn.to/45cmGUG" class="affiliate-link" rel="nofollow sponsored noopener" target="_blank">3</a>-axis solution for the vue series. the radiometric data is useless if the image is blurry from vibration i would think.</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">3424</guid><pubDate>Thu, 30 Jul 2026 15:05:52 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>switched to a heavier gimbal and now my footage looks worse somehow??</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/3423-switched-to-a-heavier-gimbal-and-now-my-footage-looks-worse-somehow/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>so ive been running a <a href="https://amzn.to/45cmGUG" class="affiliate-link" rel="nofollow sponsored noopener" target="_blank">3</a>-axis gimbal with my Sony a6400 for about 8 months now, pretty happy with the stabilization, not perfect but workable. decided to upgrade to a bigger unit because i wanted to carry the a7 III for better low light performance on some event work im doing. got everything balanced properly, or at least i think i did, took it out last weekend and honestly the footage looks more jittery than before not less. like theres this weird oscillation that kicks in whenever i do a yaw rotation. pan shots are especially bad.</p><p>i dont think its a PID issue because i havent touched any of that yet, just wondering if anyone has run into this where going bigger actually made things worse before they got better. the new gimbal is rated for the weight so its not overloaded or anything. payload is right in the middle of the range actually.</p><p>the drone is a custom hex if that matters, hobbywing X6 motors, 30x10 props roughly. pretty stable platform generally speaking.</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">3423</guid><pubDate>Thu, 30 Jul 2026 15:05:28 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>thinking about adding a thermal payload to my M300 ? is the Zenmuse H20T actually worth the price jump over just running a separate FLIR</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/3402-thinking-about-adding-a-thermal-payload-to-my-m300-is-the-zenmuse-h20t-actually-worth-the-price-jump-over-just-running-a-separate-flir/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>okay so background: i do a mix of infrastructure inspection and some search and rescue volunteer work, mostly flying a Matrice 300 which has been absolutely solid for that stuff. right now im using the H20 (non-T) and for most inspection work its fine but weve had a couple SAR callouts where thermal would have been genuinely useful and i keep borrowing a buddies setup which is annoying.</p><p>the H20T is obviously the cleaner solution since its all integrated and the sensor fusion between the thermal and zoom is actually really useful in practice, ive used it a few times. but the price is brutal. ive also seen people cobbling together third party FLIR cameras on a separate gimbal on the aux port and getting decent results, supposedly. the integration is obviously worse but if the actual thermal image quality is comparable or better it might be worth it depending on how the numbers work out.</p><p>anyone gone deep on this comparison or have real world experience with both? talking like a bmpcc 6k or even an s35 sensor camera on a decent <a href="https://amzn.to/45cmGUG" class="affiliate-link" rel="nofollow sponsored noopener" target="_blank">3</a>-axis like the gremsy h16 or movi pro ? versus just buying something like an inspire <a href="https://amzn.to/45cmGUG" class="affiliate-link" rel="nofollow sponsored noopener" target="_blank">3</a> or one of the alta setups that's purpose built for it.</p><p>the math on paper looks like building my own payload rig would be cheaper and i'd have more flexibility to swap cameras but every time i talk to people who've actually done production work they seem to lean toward the integrated systems. i get that the zenmuse x9 on the inspire is incredible but the whole ecosystem lock-in thing bothers me. and i already have the airframe so there's something to be said for not spending another 15-16k on a platform</p><p>has anyone actually run a bmpcc or similar on a gremsy under a heavy lift for real production stuff? worth it for the image quality jump</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/3334-thinking-about-swapping-to-a-heavier-camera-payload-worth-it-for-the-image-quality-jump/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>background: i've been shooting aerial footage for about two years, mostly real estate and some event work. currently running a Zenmuse X7 on my Inspire 2 and honestly the footage is great, clients are happy, no real complaints. but ive been looking at some setups people are rigging with full Micro Four Thirds cameras ? specifically the GH6 ? and the dynamic range difference in certain lighting conditions is pretty noticeable when you compare side by side.</p><p>the problem is going that route means building out a custom frame, sourcing a gimbal that can handle the weight properly, recalculating flight times because obviously payload goes up, and just generally a whole project. i keep going back and forth on whether the image quality difference actually justifies all of that for the work i'm doing. like is anyone actually running something in that weight class for commercial work and finding it worth the hassle vs just using an integrated system</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">3334</guid><pubDate>Tue, 28 Jul 2026 19:06:19 +0000</pubDate></item></channel></rss>
