so i went to my first real drone meetup last month after hearing everyone talk about how great they are and honestly it was kind of underwhelming. dont get me wrong the people were nice enough but half the time was just standing around talking gear and watching one person fly at a time. felt more like a car show than actually flying. maybe i went to the wrong one? idk. maybe bigger events are different but this one was like 8 dudes in a parking lot

saw a post somewhere about a group fly-in happening saturday at henderson lake, think it was organized through the local FPV club but i cant find the original thread now. anyone know if its still happening? was thinking about bringing the DJI and maybe the 5inch if theres enough space away from the normies lol

so ive been flying for about a year now and there isnt really anything going on locally, closest club is like 45 mins away and they seem pretty serious about the whole AMA membership thing which im not against but its a bit much for what i want which is basically just a few people showing up at a field and flying together. does anyone do informal stuff like that or is it always tied to a club. i guess im also wondering about liability and whether i need to worry about that if its just a casual thing with no entry fee or anything

saw it posted on the facebook group but wasnt sure if its still happening, someone said they might move it due to weather. i went last year and it was a good time, mostly fixed wing guys but a few of us brought our quads and nobody cared. just wondering if anyone here is planning to go or has more info about the location this time around

so i finally went to one of those organized group flight things my local club does every few months and idk, maybe my expectations were off. half the people were standing around talking and not really flying, which fine whatever, but then when everyone did go up at the same time it felt really chaotic and nobody seemed to be communicating about altitudes or anything. im probably overthinking it and i get that its casual but we had like 12 aircraft up at once at one point and i was genuinely a little nervous. do other clubs actually coordinate this stuff or is it always kind of just vibes

saw a flyer posted on the club facebook page about a casual fly-in at eastbrook park saturday morning, looks like its just an informal thing, bring whatever you want to fly. i've never been to one of these group things before and honestly dont know what to expect. do people just... fly around near each other? is there like a schedule or is it totally freeform? last thing i want is to show up with my mini 3 and feel like a complete idiot standing around not knowing anyone

so we do this thing every other sunday where like 8 or 10 of us meet at the field and just fly together, been doing it for maybe six months. yesterday tho someone showed up with a brand new pilot who had literally never flown anything before, not even a sim, and they handed him a 3inch and just let him rip. guy panicked and it went into someones car. wasnt bad damage but the whole vibe was just off after that. now theres this whole thing about whether we should have like rules for new people or just keep it casual. honestly dont know where i land on it

so ive been flying for about two years now and honestly never gone to a single organized event, always just fly solo at the park or whatever. saw someone post about a fly-in happening down in ohio and it got me thinking i should actually go to one of these things. do people actually bring their whole setup or just like one bird? and is it weird showing up alone not knowing anyone

ok so we had maybe 8 or 9 people out at the reservoir spot we use and it was going fine until two guys decided to race through the same gap at the same time without calling it. one of them clipped the other mid air and both went down in the water. one quad was completely toast, the other guy managed to fish his out and it actually still armed which was insane. nobody got hurt but the vibe got awkward for like an hour after that. we've been talking about doing a more formal thing where we actually call out what we're doing before we just yeet into a line. anyone do any kind of communication system for group flying or do you just kind of figure it out as you go

ok so we had maybe 8 or 9 people out at the reservoir spot we use sometimes and it started off great, weather was perfect, everyone had fresh packs. then about an hour in two guys decided to race each other through this gap between some trees and one of them clipped a branch and went down hard. props everywhere, motor mount cracked, the whole thing. he was pretty cool about it but it definitely changed the vibe for a bit. we ended up just doing more chill flying after that and honestly that part was more fun anyway, just cruising around and someone had a long range wing that we passed the goggles around for. that was actually sick, never flown a wing before and the efficiency is just wild compared to what im used to

so theres a local AMA fly-in about 45 mins from me next month and ive never been to one of these things. i mostly just fly alone at a field near my house and never really thought about going to group events but a buddy mentioned it and now im curious. do people actually help each other out at these or is it more like everyone just does their own thing? also not sure if my setup is good enough to show up with, i only have a mini 3 pro and everyone there probably has like massive cinewhoops and race quads and stuff. feels a bit intimidating honestly

ok so we had our monthly group flight and i dont even know where to start. like 12 people showed up which is way more than usual and nobody really coordinated who was flying when so we had 4 or 5 quads up at the same time at one point and it got pretty chaotic. nobody crashed but it felt like we got lucky. think we need some kind of actual system for this but im not sure how other groups handle it, does anyone do like a rotation or designated flight windows or something

ok so i spent like two weeks trying to get a group flight thing together for our area, made a facebook event, posted in like 3 different groups, got 18 people saying they were coming. showed up saturday morning and it was me and two other guys. one of them i didnt even know, he just happened to be flying at the same field.

not really sure what i did wrong honestly. the weather was fine, the field is decent, i gave enough notice. maybe facebook events are just useless now? or people just flake on drone stuff more than other hobbies idk. thinking about trying again but maybe doing a smaller thing, like just directly messaging 4 or 5 people instead of a big open invite. anyone had luck actually getting a group together that shows up

so ive been seeing posts about a fly-in at Prado dry lake bed this saturday and im trying to figure out if its worth the drive. last time i went to one of these things it was like 6 people standing around in the heat and nobody really talked to each other lol. but a buddy said this one is supposed to be bigger, someone mentioned like 50+ pilots showing up which would be pretty cool actually.

anyone here going or been to one of these before? also not sure if i should bring the mini 4 pro or drag out the 5 inch freestyle build. probably the freestyle stuff is more fun to watch but the mini is way less hassle to transport

so we had about 15 people show up which was way more than usual and nobody really had a plan for how to handle that many people flying at once. ended up with like 6 quads in the air at the same time and one guy almost clipped another dude's fpv build on a low pass. nobody crashed but it got tense. i think we need to set up some kind of rotation or at least agree on altitude bands before we just all launch at once. does anyone elses club actually do this in an organized way or is it always kind of freeform chaos

ok so finally went to one of those community fly-in events at the local rc airfield and honestly i was kind of nervous going in because i thought everyone would be super serious and judgy about gear or whatever. but it was actually pretty chill, lotta older guys flying traditional rc planes who were super friendly and werent weird about me showing up with a mavic. one dude spent like 45 mins just talking to me about how he got into it back in the 80s which was cool even if it wasnt exactly what i came for. only thing that was a bit awkward is i didnt realise there were like unofficial rules about flight patterns and i nearly cut across someone elses line which apparently is a big no-no. nobody made a huge deal out of it but def something to know before you go. overall glad i went though

ok so ive been watching youtube videos and lurking on here for about a year now and finally went to an actual in person meetup. honestly thought it was gonna be like super intimidating with everyone showing off their crazy builds but it was just a bunch of normal dudes standing in a field talking about motors and batteries for like 2 hours before anyone even flew anything lol

the flying itself was cool though. someone let me take a few punches on their 5inch which was insane, i completely binned it into a tree on my second pack but the guy was super chill about it which i did not expect. i think im addicted now. anyway if youre on the fence about going to one of these things just go, the people are way more welcoming than the internet makes them seem sometimes

so i heard there's a group flight thing happening at lake mills saturday morning, some guy from the local RC club posted about it on facebook but i cant find the original post anymore. does anyone know if its still happening or if theyve moved it because of the weather forecast

i went to one they did last spring and it was pretty chill, mostly guys with whoops and some 5inch builds but there were a couple of wing guys too which was cool to watch. anyway if anyone has more info lemme know i dont wanna drive 45 mins for nothing

so i finally went to one of those club meetup things my buddy kept telling me about and idk it was a mixed experience. like everyone was super friendly dont get me wrong but theres this weird thing where youre all flying in the same general area and you spend half the time just watching where everyone else is instead of actually enjoying your own flight. maybe im just used to flying solo. also one guy brought an fpv freestyle quad and was just absolutely sending it while the rest of us are doing these slow cinematic passes and it felt a little chaotic. not saying i wont go back just wasnt quite what i pictured
