almost got my drone confiscated at the border lol

ok so this is partly a cautionary tale and partly just me venting. flew into Morocco last week and the customs guy pulled me aside when he saw the drone on the xray. spent about 45 minutes going back and forth while he called someone and i just stood there sweating. eventually they let me through but apparently Morocco has some pretty strict rules about bringing drones in and i had no idea you were supposed to declare it or potentially get a permit before arriving.

ended up being fine but honestly i was terrified they were gonna keep it. anyone else had something like this happen, feels like every country is completely different and theres no easy way to know whats what until youre already standing at the border

so ive been planning this trip to Iceland for like 6 months and only just started looking into the drone rules there and honestly its a bit overwhelming. i have a DJI Mini 3 Pro so under 250g which i thought would make everything simple but apparently there are still registration requirements depending on where you fly and some of the national parks and nature reserves are straight up no-fly zones which i did not expect.

anyone actually flown there and navigated the whole permit process? specifically around the south coast and maybe near Vatnajokull. would love to know if its even worth bringing the drone or if ill spend the whole trip stressing about whether im allowed to be there

got stopped by a ranger in Moab, kind of annoying

yeah so this happened last weekend. was out near Arches, not inside the park obviously i knew that was a no-go, but on some BLM land just outside and this ranger comes over and starts asking questions. i had all my stuff ready, TRUST card, registration, everything but he still made me pack up and said he needed to verify the airspace or whatever. spent like 45 minutes just waiting there

checked B4UFLY before i went out and it showed clear. still got hassled. not really sure what the point was but just heads up if youre going to that area, seems like they're being extra careful right now, maybe because of busy season idk

so ive been planning this trip to Iceland for like 8 months and obviously bringing the mini 4 pro. but im getting a bit nervous about the rules there, ive heard its pretty strict in some areas especially around national parks. anyone actually flown there recently and can tell me what its actually like on the ground vs what the official rules say

also the wind situation, like i know its Iceland so obviously its gonna be rough but how bad are we actually talking. had my drone nearly get away from me in Scotland last year and that was not fun

yeah so this was a whole thing. flew into a country i wont name and they pulled me aside at customs and just... took it. said i needed an import permit i had never heard of. did some research after and apparently some countries treat drones like commercial equipment and you have to declare them and have paperwork or they hold it until you leave. had to pick it up on the way out which was just incredibly annoying and stressful the whole trip.

anyway just wanted to warn people because i was totally blindsided. i thought i was pretty good about researching rules before i travel but the customs/import side of things i had completely ignored. gonna be a lot more careful going forward

so im heading to lisbon and the algarve in about 5 weeks and obviously bringing the mavic. ive been trying to read up on the rules there and its honestly confusing me more than helping. from what i can tell you need to register with ANAC and have your EU drone operator ID but like... does that actually apply if youre coming from the US or do they have some kind of tourist exception? i cant find a straight answer anywhere.

also curious if anyone has actually flown around sintra or the pena palace area because those photos look insane but i suspect thats all restricted airspace or protected land or something. would love to know before i haul the whole kit over there for nothing.

leaving in 4 days for a 10 day trip to colorado, mostly backcountry stuff, some national forest areas and one day near rocky mountain national park. brought the air 3 and two extra batteries and just realized i should probably double check what im actually allowed to do out there. i know national parks are basically a no go for drones but national forest is different right? also carrying the batteries in my carry on obviously but the TSA thing still makes me nervous every time even though ive done it before

anyone done colorado specifically or similar trips where youre mixing park land and forest land in the same week

so i just got back from Portugal and honestly the drone stuff was way more stressful than the actual flying. spent like two nights before the trip trying to figure out if my mini 3 pro needed to be registered there and whether i needed authorization for the spots i wanted to shoot. ended up registering on the ENAC site which i think was wrong?? portugal uses ANAC and i only figured that out like the morning we landed. somehow nothing bad happened but i was lowkey nervous every time i pulled it out near lisbon.

anyone else done europe with a non-EU registered drone? does the whole EASA open category thing actually apply to tourists or is it more like... a grey area that nobody enforces

so this just happened yesterday and im still kind of annoyed about it. was flying at this state park near the coast, had done my research, checked the airspace, no restrictions showing on aloft or on the park website as far as i could tell. about 10 minutes into a really good flight this ranger pulls up and tells me drones are banned in the entire park, no exceptions.

i showed him what i found on the website and he basically shrugged and said its a local ordinance that isnt posted online. had to land and that was that. didnt get a fine or anything but lost the footage i wanted. i guess the lesson is always call ahead? i thought i did everything right

okay so this just happened yesterday and im still kind of annoyed about it. flew into barcelona and on the way back through the airport security pulled my whole bag apart because of the lipo batteries. i had three of them in my carry on in a lipo safe bag like you're supposed to and they still made me take everything out and go through this whole thing with a supervisor.

eventually they let me through but it took like 25 minutes and i nearly missed my boarding. the thing is ive done this exact same setup through like 6 other airports no problem. is it just pot luck with which security person you get or am i doing something wrong. do people actually tape over the contacts or is that just overkill

but what i really want to know is practical stuff ? like how do you handle the wind out there near the coast. ive heard it can get absolutely brutal and im a little worried about losing the drone or just getting garbage footage because its fighting the wind the whole time. also is there anything weird about flying near the geysers or national park areas i should know about. anyone whos actually been there and flown please help me out

ok so this just happened to me coming back from japan and im still annoyed about it. i had four lipo batteries in my carry on, all under 100wh which i thought was the limit, checked this like three times before i left. the security guy at narita pulls them out and says i can only take two on board and the other two have to go in checked luggage which i know is literally not allowed for lipos. ended up having to just leave two of them behind. anyone else had this happen? is there an actual consistent rule or does it just depend on the airline and airport on the day

yeah so this happened. flying into Morocco last week and customs just took the whole thing. apparently you need some kind of import permit or declaration beforehand and i had absolutely no idea. nobody told me and i didnt really do my homework tbh. they said i could get it back on the way out but then that process was also a nightmare and i ended up leaving without it

lesson learned i guess. always check what the destination country actually requires before you pack it in your carry on like its nothing. lost a mavic 3 over this which still hurts to think about

just got back from southeast asia and yeah it was a whole thing. customs pulled me aside in one of the countries and basically said i needed a permit i didnt have. had to surrender the drone for like four days while they processed some paperwork and i nearly had to leave without it. ended up getting it back on my last day which was lucky but i lost basically half my shooting days

i thought i had done my research but clearly not enough. some of these countries the rules are just totally different from what you read online and by the time you find out youre already there

wasnt even planning it, just threw the mavic in the back seat friday afternoon and drove like 4 hours out into the mojave. no real plan. and honestly it was perfect ? zero people, no restricted airspace anywhere near where i ended up, just massive open sky and these insane rock formations at golden hour. flew for probably 3 hours total over the two days and didnt see another soul.

only hiccup was the wind picked up on saturday afternoon way faster than the forecast said and i had to cut a flight short. thing was fighting pretty hard to hold position and i didnt want to push it. but other than that, unreal. if youre close enough to drive to any decent desert just go, seriously worth it

so i finally did the trip ive been planning for like two years, tokyo and then up north to hokkaido, and honestly the permit situation was way more stressful than i expected. i knew japan had rules but i didnt realize how specific the no-fly zones were around basically every interesting place. most of the temples, parks, anything near people ? all restricted. had to use the DIPS system to apply for permits and even then got rejected twice for spots i really wanted to shoot.

ended up getting some decent footage in rural hokkaido where it was a lot more open but even there you have to be careful about national park boundaries. anyone else been through this recently? feels like the rules tightened up a lot compared to what i read in older posts on here

ok so this is a bit embarasing but i was in the azores last week flying off this cliff near sete cidades and i got so focused on the composition that i didnt notice how far out over the water i had drifted. wind picked up out of nowhere and the thing was fighting to come back, battery was dropping way faster than normal and i genuinely thought that was it.

made it back with like 8% left. hands were shaking the whole time. the footage is incredible but man i was not thinking about return to home distances at all. lesson learned i guess ? always check the wind before you go chasing a shot over open water because it looks calm from the ground and it absolutely is not up there.

ok so just got back from two weeks driving through the southwest, utah arizona new mexico, and brought the air 2s for the first time on a real trip like this. a few things i wish i had known before going. first, the national park thing is real and they will actually enforce it, saw a ranger confiscate someone's drone at zion which was painful to watch. second, desert heat absolutely wrecks your battery life, i was losing like 20% more flight time than usual in the afternoon heat. third and this is the one that got me, wind in moab is nothing like flying at home. i thought i was a decent pilot but that place humbled me fast, ended up cutting a lot of sessions short because i just didnt trust myself. still got some amazing footage overall though, the light out there is insane

so this happened last week and im still kind of annoyed about it honestly. i knew beforehand that the south rim is a no fly zone and i wasnt planning to fly there at all, i drove like 40 minutes out to an area that was clearly outside the park boundary according to both google maps and the b4ufly app showed clear. set up, flew maybe 10 minutes of footage, and a ranger in a truck pulls up

turns out the boundary is way less obvious on the ground than on a map and apparently the area i was at is considered park adjacent or something and they have some kind of agreement with the surrounding land? i honestly still dont fully understand the explanation i got. they didnt fine me or confiscate anything, just told me to pack up and leave. but i drove 6 hours for that shot and yeah

anyway just wanted to warn people that b4ufly isnt always the whole story especially near national parks. do your research beyond just the app
