running ExpressLRS 2.4ghz for control and I have a walksnail avatar system for video. everything works great close in but once i push out past maybe 600m the video starts breaking up pretty bad while the control link is still showing like 95+ LQ on my goggles. by the time im at 800m the feed is basically unwatchable but i can still control the quad just fine.</p><p>i get that video and control are totally separate systems but is it normal for the gap to be that big? i kind of expected them to degrade roughly together. my video transmitter is set to 1000mw which i thought would be plenty. antennas on the walksnail side are the stock ones that came with the kit, wondering if thats my weak point. i didnt do anything fancy with antenna placement either, just kind of zip tied them to the back of the frame which maybe wasnt the smartest.</p><p>not really trying to fly fpv at 800m regularly but id like to understand why theres such a big gap between the two links degrading</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">4140</guid><pubDate>Wed, 12 Aug 2026 19:14:57 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>keeps dropping signal mid flight ? i never thought much about it before but now im wondering if thats the culprit. tried switching to 2.4ghz manually instead of letting it auto-select and the drops seem slightly less frequent? hard to tell though.</p><p>anyone dealt with this kind of thing, like consistent disconnect at a predictable distance? v antenna placement maybe?</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/4054-fpv-quad-signal-cutting-out-on-longer-range-runs-v-antenna-placement-maybe/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>been messing with this for a while now and kind of at a loss. running a 5.8ghz analog setup, vtx is a rush tank unity pushing around 400mw, goggles are fat shark dominators with the stock pagoda antennas. everything is fine close range and even medium distance but once i get out past maybe 300-350 meters i start getting breakup, not total loss just heavy static, and if i push further it gets bad enough that id be flying blind.</p><p>i know 5.8ghz has range limitations compared to 2.4 but my buddy runs almost identical gear and gets way more range out of it. makes me think its either my vtx mounting or antenna placement on the quad. the antenna exits right under the battery which i know isnt ideal but i didnt have a lot of options with this build.</p><p>thinking about trying a patch or helical on the goggle side to get more directional gain but id have to track pretty precisely. anyone gone down this rabbit hole with analog setups, is it worth it or should i just look at the quad side first.</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">4054</guid><pubDate>Tue, 11 Aug 2026 01:13:05 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>keeps disconnecting mid flight and i cant figure out why</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/4053-keeps-disconnecting-mid-flight-and-i-cant-figure-out-why/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>so this has been driving me crazy for the past few weeks. im flying my mini 3 pro and it just randomly drops connection, sometimes for like 2 seconds sometimes long enough that it goes into return to home which is fine i guess but still annoying. it doesnt happen every flight, maybe like 1 in 3 or 4.</p><p>the weird thing is it seems worse at a specific park near my house but i flew it at the coast last weekend and had zero issues. i checked the rc-n1 signal strength and it looks fine right before it drops, no warning or anything. just goes dark on the screen then reconnects. im on the latest firmware.</p><p>anyone dealt with this before? which one actually works better for you</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/3966-24-vs-58-in-a-suburban-area-which-one-actually-works-better-for-you/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>okay so ive been going back and forth on this for a while and i feel like i get a different answer every time i ask. im flying mostly in suburban neighborhoods, lots of houses, lots of wifi routers, probably a decent amount of bluetooth garbage floating around too. using a mavic 3 classic with the RC-N1 controller.</p><p>the conventional wisdom ive heard is that 2.4ghz travels farther and penetrates better but its more congested, and 5.8 is less crowded but shorter range and worse through obstacles. but like, in practice does that actually hold up? my experience after 6 months</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/2841-o3-vs-lightbridge-in-areas-with-a-lot-of-rf-noise-my-experience-after-6-months/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>okay so this isnt really a question more just sharing what ive noticed because i see people arguing about this constantly and most of them havent actually flown both systems in real conditions. i fly a lot around an industrial park near me, theres a ton of machinery, some kind of radio equipment on the buildings, general RF mess. used to run a phantom 4 pro with Lightbridge for years and it was rock solid in there, occasional latency spike but never a full disconnect.</p><p>switched to a mavic <a href="https://amzn.to/45cmGUG" class="affiliate-link" rel="nofollow sponsored noopener" target="_blank">3</a> classic about 8 months ago with O3 and honestly the first month i thought i'd made a mistake. was getting these weird micro-dropouts, like the video would artifact and then clear up, happened maybe every couple minutes. not dangerous really but annoying and made me nervous. what i eventually figured out after a lot of testing is that O3 seems to recover faster when it does drop but it drops more often in heavy interference. Lightbridge felt more like it would degrade gracefully ? you'd see the quality go down before anything bad happened. O3 is more binary almost, fine fine fine then blip then fine again.</p><p>after the firmware updates over the past few months its gotten better, like noticeably. but i still think in genuinely nasty RF environments the older Lightbridge implementation had something going for it that people kind of dismiss now because O3 has better range in clean conditions. anyway just my two cents from actual flying not spec sheets.</p>]]></description><guid isPermaLink="false">2841</guid><pubDate>Sun, 19 Jul 2026 01:15:46 +0000</pubDate></item><item><title>keeps dropping connection mid flight and i cant figure out why</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/2840-keeps-dropping-connection-mid-flight-and-i-cant-figure-out-why/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>so ive been dealing with this for about three weeks now and its starting to drive me crazy. im flying a <a href="https://amzn.to/45cmGUG" class="affiliate-link" rel="nofollow sponsored noopener" target="_blank">mini 3</a> pro, using the RC-N1 controller, and somewhere between 200-400m out it just drops. not every time, sometimes it'll go to 800m no problem, but other times it cuts at like 250m and i get that gray screen for a few seconds before it reconnects. never actually lost the drone but its nerve wracking.</p><p>ive tried switching from 2.4ghz to 5.8ghz and back, doesnt seem to make a difference. flying in a semi-rural area, not super dense with wifi but there's a neighborhood maybe half a km away. checked the antenna orientation on the controller, they're vertical when the drone is at that distance so shouldnt be an issue. updated firmware last week thinking that might fix it but same thing.</p><p>anyone dealt with something like this? how bad is it actually</title><link>https://www.dronetalkhub.com/forums/topic/2821-flying-near-powerlines-how-bad-is-it-actually/</link><description><![CDATA[<p>so i know youre not supposed to fly near powerlines and yeah yeah i know. but im trying to do some inspection work on a property and theres a row of distribution lines running along the edge of the field. not transmission towers, just the standard neighborhood distribution lines, probably 7600V single phase stuff based on the poles.</p><p>curious what peoples actual experience is with this. ive read everything from its totally fine stay 30 feet away to it will fry your electronics. seems like a lot of it is anecdotal. im using an autel evo 2 pro if that matters, ocusync equivalent is their skylink system. planning to stay at least 50 feet lateral distance from the lines and not fly directly over them.</p><p>the compass interference is what im more worried about than the signal honestly ? switched from auto to manual channel selection on the RC, tried both 2.4 and 5.8ghz, checked for obvious interference sources. i fly at a field outside town, not exactly downtown manhattan. the weird part is it doesnt happen every flight, maybe every third or fourth one. and when it does happen it usually recovers after like 10-15 seconds but by then RTH has kicked in and im just watching it fly home annoyed.</p><p>running latest firmware, RC2 controller, nothing weird installed. anyone seen this kind of intermittent thing before?
