DJI Inspire 3 Review: The Ultimate Professional Cinema Drone in

What Is the DJI Inspire 3? Overview and Target Audience

Brief History of the Inspire Series

DJI Inspire has been the top cinema drone series from the Chinese manufacturer ever since the first DJI Inspire was announced in November 2014. A hefty drone weighing 6.5 pounds and offering up to 15 minutes of battery life, it gave remote pilots the ability to rotate the camera a full 360° in flight and tilt 125°, along with the ability to swap out cameras and lenses. Two years later, in November 2016, DJI announced the hugely improved successor, DJI Inspire 2, with up to 5.2K raw video capture and camera modules with interchangeable lenses. Then, after a long and rather agonizing wait for the industry, DJI introduced the Inspire 3 as a game-changer in professional drone technology, announced in April 2023.

Who Is the DJI Inspire 3 Designed For?

The DJI Inspire 3 is a powerful drone with precise control, aimed at professional filmmakers, with further use cases including commercial inspections and surveying. There is a very particular audience that the Inspire 3 caters to, and it's not necessarily the same group that would have purchased the Inspire 2. This is very much a professional, high-end filmmaking device that requires a steady amount of incoming work to rationalize the $16,500 price.

Think feature film crews, television broadcast teams, high-end commercial directors, and serious aerial cinematographers who are billing serious clients. That certainly doesn't mean you can't buy this high-spec drone if you're a passionate hobbyist and have the budget to do so, but you do need to be aware that the DJI Inspire 3 is much less convenient than smaller models such as the DJI Mini 3 Pro.

How It Compares to the Inspire 2 at a Glance

The Inspire 3 is not simply an evolutionary step over the Inspire 2 - it's a generational leap. The DJI Inspire 3 is compatible with the all-new X9-8K Air gimbal camera, which has been engineered especially for the aircraft. In contrast, the DJI Inspire 2 can be used with a range of cameras such as the X7, X5S, and X4S, with the X7 being the most powerful option for filmmakers. With this in mind, the X9-8K Air has some major upgrades on the Inspire 2's headline camera, the X7. Most notably, the Zenmuse X9-8K Air is equipped with a full-frame image sensor that can record video at up to 8K RAW. On the transmission side, O3 Pro is a generational leap in distance, video latency, and stability compared to the Inspire 2. The Inspire 3 also brings omnidirectional obstacle sensing for the first time and a dramatically improved dual-operator workflow.

Maximum Flight Time and Range

The DJI Inspire 3 has a max wind resistance of 12 m/s at takeoff/landing and 14 m/s in-flight. Max flight time is approximately 28 minutes with landing gears lowered and approximately 26 minutes with landing gears raised, measured in a controlled wind tunnel environment under conditions equivalent to windless operation and sea-level altitude, with the aircraft flying forward at a constant speed of 36 kph.

Regarding transmission range, the RC Plus gives you 1080p/60p video streaming at a range up to 15 km (9.3 miles) while operating with one controller, and up to 12 km (7.5 miles) in dual-control mode. A 4K/30p live feed at a reduced max distance of 5km is available for UHD monitoring and live streaming.

Weight, Dimensions, and Portability Considerations

This is a large and heavy drone at 140.91 oz / 3,995 g when compared to consumer models such as the DJI Mavic 3 series, and the set-up time is longer, so it's nowhere near as easy to transport as smaller consumer models. The DJI Inspire 3 measures 27.9 x 6.9 x 19.7 inches (709.8 x 176 x 500.5 mm) in Travel Mode. The Inspire 3 is a large and heavy drone that's not comfortable or easy to carry over uneven terrain, despite the kit including an extremely useful trolley case. Set-up time is also longer than for a consumer-level drone, so this is not a model for casual users who require convenience and portability.

Battery System: TB51 Intelligent Flight Batteries

The new TB51 battery features higher energy density with reduced weight and size, which is beneficial for the total flight time and wind resistance when flying forward, and is more advantageous than TB50 in terms of discharge voltage and reliability. They provide a 28-minute max flight time and support hot swapping. The all-new foldable battery charging hub can accommodate eight batteries, and in Fast mode, it can charge two batteries to 90% in just 35 minutes and eight batteries to 100% in only 160 minutes.

The TB51 Intelligent Battery is equipped with high-performance, high-energy battery cells to provide robust power and uses an advanced battery management system. It also optimizes low-temperature performance of the cell with a built-in auto-heating system. The Inspire 3 uses a dual-battery system (two TB51s simultaneously), which contributes to both performance and redundancy during flight.

Camera System: Zenmuse X9-8K Air

8K RAW Video Capabilities Explained

The Zenmuse X9-8K Air is equipped with a full-frame image sensor that can record video at up to 8K RAW. It supports 14+ stops of dynamic range and dual native ISO to retain more details, meeting the needs of a wide variety of cinematography scenarios.

The numbers behind this capability are staggering. DJI's latest image processing system, CineCore 3.0, supports internal recording of up to 8K/25fps in CinemaDNG video as well as 8K/75fps in ProRes RAW (8K/75fps shooting requires full-frame 2.4:1 aspect ratio and Apple ProRes RAW in S&Q mode). In S&Q mode, the X9-8K Air supports internal recording of up to full-frame 4K/120fps ProRes RAW video without cropping.

Apple ProRes and CinemaDNG Recording Options

The Inspire 3 uses the CineCore 3.0 system to support internal recording of Cinema DNG, ProRes RAW, ProRes 422 HQ, and H.264 video. To record in Cinema DNG or ProRes RAW, you need to buy an additional license key. This is an important consideration for your budget - the base Inspire 3 combo kit does not include access to these premium codecs out of the box.

An included DJI PROSSD 1TB features up to 1100MB/s write speed and up to 900MB/s read speed and can be connected directly to a computer via USB-C cable for easy file sharing. The hot-swappable SSD design means you can swap storage on set without powering down, keeping your production workflow moving at pace.

Full-Frame Sensor Advantages for Aerial Cinematography

Image quality from the full-frame sensor and interchangeable lenses is fantastic and blows smaller drone models out of the water. The full-frame advantage in the context of aerial cinematography is profound: shallower depth of field, better bokeh, and critically superior low-light performance compared to any smaller-sensor drone camera on the market.

The dynamic range is on par if not better than all full-frame cameras in the consumer price bracket tested. Only high-end cinema cameras like the RED V-Raptor 8K or the ALEXA Mini LF manage to top these results. That's an extraordinary benchmark for a drone-mounted camera.
