Class E Airspace and Operating Requirements

FAA ACS ? Task II.A: Airspace Classification

Class E is the most widespread airspace class by area, and it is also the source of one of the most commonly missed distinctions on the Knowledge Test: most Class E airspace does NOT require Part 107 authorization, even though it is technically "controlled" airspace. This lesson explains exactly why, and identifies the one specific type of Class E that genuinely does need authorization.

Class E is the "everything else" controlled airspace category

Class E covers all controlled airspace that isn't specifically designated Class A, B, C, or D. It exists to provide instrument flight rule separation services at various altitudes across most of the country, and its ceiling generally runs up to (but not including) 18,000 feet MSL, where Class A begins. Unlike Class B, C, and D, Class E is not built around a single airport in most locations ? it covers vast stretches of the country with a floor set at different altitudes depending on the area.

The most common Class E floors: 700 feet and 1,200 feet AGL

The two most widespread Class E floor altitudes are 700 feet AGL and 1,200 feet AGL. On a sectional chart, a 700-foot floor is shown with a shaded magenta ring (a "vignette"), and a 1,200-foot floor is shown with a shaded blue vignette ? Module 4 covers reading these symbols directly on a chart in full detail. Crucially, since standard Part 107 operations are capped at 400 feet AGL, the overwhelming majority of everyday sUAS flights never actually reach these Class E floors at all ? meaning they're flying in the uncontrolled Class G airspace beneath Class E, not inside Class E itself.

The one Class E type that DOES require authorization: surface areas

Some airports without an operating control tower (or with specific instrument approach capability) have a Class E surface area designated specifically for that airport, extending down to the surface within defined lateral boundaries ? depicted on a sectional chart with a dashed magenta line. This is the one specific circumstance where Class E genuinely requires 14 CFR 107.41 authorization: only Class E airspace within the lateral boundaries of a surface area designated for an airport needs prior ATC authorization. The much more common 700-foot and 1,200-foot floor Class E, away from any such surface area, needs no authorization at all.

Real-world scenario: two flights, two very different answers

A pilot plans a rooftop inspection in a rural area where the sectional chart shows a 700-foot magenta-shaded Class E floor overhead. Since the planned flight altitude of 150 feet AGL is well below that 700-foot floor, the flight operates in Class G, not Class E ? no 107.41 authorization is needed for airspace reasons.

The same pilot later takes a job near a small non-towered airport that has a designated Class E surface area (visible as a dashed magenta line on the chart) because it has an instrument approach procedure. Here, Class E extends all the way to the surface within that boundary ? meaning even a 50-foot-AGL flight inside that dashed magenta line requires 107.41 authorization, exactly like operating inside a Class D cylinder.

Does every Class E area require Part 107 authorization?

No. Only Class E surface areas designated for an airport require authorization under 107.41. Standard Class E with a 700-foot or 1,200-foot floor does not, since typical sUAS flights stay below those floors entirely.
