What LAANC is and what it automates
LAANC connects FAA-approved third-party applications directly to FAA airspace data, allowing a Part 107 pilot to submit an airspace authorization request for Class B, C, D, or a Class E surface area and, for most requests, receive approval within seconds to minutes rather than the days or longer a fully manual process could take. It doesn't replace the underlying 14 CFR 107.41 authorization requirement ? it's the fast, automated mechanism for satisfying it.
UAS Facility Maps: the grid behind the automation
The FAA pre-approves a maximum altitude for LAANC auto-approval at every location around a covered airport using UAS Facility Maps (UASFMs) ? grids of individual cells covering the controlled airspace near that airport, each assigned its own maximum altitude the FAA can automatically approve, ranging from 0 feet AGL (no auto-approval available) up to 400 feet AGL. When a pilot submits a LAANC request for a specific altitude at a specific location, the system checks the requested altitude against that location's grid-cell ceiling: at or below the ceiling, approval happens automatically; above it, the request cannot be auto-approved through LAANC.
Ceiling altitudes are not uniform ? cells directly beneath approach and departure paths near runway thresholds, where manned aircraft fly lowest, tend to have the lowest ceilings (sometimes 0 feet), while ceilings generally increase moving outward toward the edge of the controlled airspace.

When LAANC isn't available or sufficient
LAANC only covers requests at or below the applicable grid cell's ceiling, and only at airports with LAANC coverage. A request for an altitude above the grid ceiling, or a request in an area without LAANC coverage, cannot be handled through LAANC ? that's when a manual FAA DroneZone request, covered in the next lesson, becomes necessary instead.
Real-world scenario: a routine LAANC approval
A pilot needs to fly a rooftop inspection at 150 feet AGL, 3.5 nautical miles from a Class D airport's reference point. Using an FAA-approved LAANC app, the pilot submits the request for that specific location and altitude. The app checks the UAS Facility Map grid cell covering that location, finds its ceiling is 250 feet AGL, and ? since the requested 150 feet is at or below that ceiling ? the system returns automatic approval within moments, well before the pilot even arrives on site.

Is LAANC available at every airport with controlled airspace?

What happens if my requested altitude is above the grid cell's ceiling?
