What a TFR is, and the Part 107 compliance rule
A temporary flight restriction is a defined block of airspace where flight is limited or prohibited for a set period of time, established by the FAA for reasons ranging from wildfires and disasters to VIP movements and major public events. 14 CFR 107.47 requires a remote pilot in command to comply with 14 CFR 91.137 through 91.145 (the manned-aviation TFR regulations) and 14 CFR 99.7 ? meaning Part 107 operators are bound by the same TFR restrictions as manned aircraft, with no separate, more lenient standard for drones.
Stadium TFRs
Stadium TFRs automatically apply during major sporting events: flight by all aircraft, including sUAS, is prohibited within a 3-nautical-mile radius of any stadium with a seating capacity of 30,000 or more, from one hour before the scheduled event start until one hour after the event ends. This is one of the most predictable TFR types, since it applies to a well-known category of recurring events rather than a one-off announcement.
VIP movement TFRs
VIP TFRs are established for the movement of the President, Vice President, and visiting heads of state. These typically involve a larger outer ring (around 30 nautical miles) with restricted operations, and a smaller inner ring (around 10 nautical miles) that is essentially closed to general aviation and sUAS traffic entirely. VIP TFRs are treated as strictly enforced no-fly zones for drone operations for their duration, which is typically limited to the length of the relevant visit.
Disaster, hazard, and wildfire TFRs
The FAA issues TFRs for disaster or hazard situations ? wildfires, floods, earthquakes, hazardous material spills, and any incident where low-flying aircraft could interfere with emergency response. These can remain active for an extended period, potentially days or weeks for a large wildfire, unlike the sharply time-limited stadium and VIP TFRs.
Why wildfire TFRs matter enormously for drone pilots specifically: firefighting aircraft ? air tankers and helicopters ? often fly at low altitude directly over an active fire, in exactly the altitude range where an unauthorized drone poses a severe collision risk. A single unauthorized drone sighting near an active wildfire has, in real incidents, forced firefighting aircraft to be grounded entirely until the area is confirmed clear, directly delaying suppression efforts while the fire continues to spread. This is the basis for the FAA and U.S. Forest Service's "If You Fly, We Can't" public awareness campaign specifically targeting drone operators near wildfires.
Real-world scenario: a stadium event photography request
A photographer is asked to capture aerial footage of a concert at a stadium with a listed capacity of 42,000, scheduled to run from 7 PM to 10 PM. Because the venue exceeds the 30,000-capacity threshold, a stadium TFR automatically applies from 6 PM to 11 PM, prohibiting the flight for that entire window regardless of the aircraft's altitude, the specific footage requested, or whether the pilot otherwise fully complies with every other Part 107 rule. The job would need to be conducted well outside that time window, or not at all within the 3-nautical-mile radius during those hours.
