so im planning a road trip out west in a few weeks and obviously bringing the mavic. grand canyon is on the itinerary and i know theres some rules but ive been getting conflicting info from different sites. some say you cant fly anywhere near it, others say theres spots just outside the park boundary that are fine. anyone actually done this and knows whats current? dont want to drive all that way and get my stuff confiscated or whatever

yeah the actual canyon is a no go, its national park airspace and they take it pretty seriously. rangers will absolutely approach you. BUT there are spots on the south rim outside park boundaries, and some areas near the east entrance if i remember right. i flew there two years ago so rules may have shifted. honestly just check the B4UFLY app the day before and look at the actual park boundary on a map, sometimes its closer than you think. also dont trust google maps for this, use something that shows actual airspace layers

i got turned away at zion last summer trying something similar lol. the ranger was actually pretty chill about it but yeah they confiscate if you argue. grand canyon prob same deal. i ended up just driving like 20 mins outside and found a random overlook on public land and it was honestly better footage anyway bc no crowds
