flying in Morocco last month - what a mess with the rules

  • Members

so i finally did the trip ive been planning for two years, took my mavic 3 out to the sahara and the atlas mountains and honestly the flying was incredible but getting there legally was a nightmare. morocco technically requires you to register with their civil aviation authority before you can fly and i found like three different sources saying three different things about whether tourists even can register. ended up just winging it in remote areas where there was nobody around for miles which i know isnt ideal but what else are you supposed to do when the official process literally doesnt work in english

the footage i got though, dunes at golden hour, worth every bit of stress. just wish the regulatory side was more straightforward for visitors. anyone else dealt with countries where the rules exist but are basically impossible to follow as a foreigner

yeah morocco is notoriously vague about this. i did some research before a trip there two years ago and basically gave up trying to get official clearance. from what i gathered talking to a local fixer, enforcement is pretty much nonexistent outside of major cities and airports, but thats not really advice i should be giving out lol. the dune shots must have been insane tho, that area around merzouga is on my list

this is kind of why i always use UAV Forecast and just cross reference with like the actual ICAO country pages before i go anywhere. still doesnt solve the registration problem you're describing but at least i know where i absolutely cannot fly. some countries just dont have a real process for tourists and its frustrating bc the rules are written like everyone is a local operator with a business license
