confused about flying near the airport - do i need to do anything before going out?

so i just got my first drone a few weeks ago, mavic mini 3 i think its called, and i want to fly at this park near me but i noticed on the map in the fly app that theres a bunch of yellow and orange stuff around the area. theres a regional airport maybe like 4 or 5 miles away and i honestly have no idea if that means i cant fly at all or if theres some process to get permission or whatever.

i looked up some stuff online but it got really confusing really fast with all the different rules and zones and i dont know if this is something i can just do on my phone or if i have to call someone or what. anyone dealt with this before?

yeah so the yellow/orange zones youre seeing are controlled airspace and for a lot of those you can actually get authorization through LAANC which is built right into apps like aloft or even the DJI fly app has it in some regions. basically you request authorization for a specific altitude and location and if its in a LAANC-enabled area it usually approves in like seconds, no joke. the tricky part is some areas are set at 0 feet authorized altitude by default which means youre not getting automatic approval and you have to go through a manual FAA waiver process which takes way longer.

4-5 miles from an airport is pretty typical controlled airspace, class D or maybe class C depending on how big the airport is. definitely dont just fly without checking first, the fines are not worth it and more importantly its a real safety thing.

also worth downloading the B4UFLY app from the FAA, its not perfect but it gives you a quick sanity check for wherever you're standing. i use it alongside aloft just to double check. the DJI geofencing in the app will also warn you or literally prevent takeoff in some zones which is annoying when youve already driven out there lol but at least it keeps people from doing something dumb by accident
