ok so this is partly funny and partly terrifying. was flying off this clifftop near sagres, super windy day, probably shouldnt have gone up but the view was incredible and i got cocky. at some point i turned around to check something on my bag and when i looked back at the screen the thing was like 400m out over the water just drifting and i had no idea how it got there

ended up getting it back fine, rth kicked in eventually but it was a solid 3 minutes of just sweating. wind off the atlantic there is no joke, it looked calm from the ground and the trees werent even moving much but up at 80 meters it was a completely different situation. check your wind readings at altitude people, not just ground level

sagres is beatiful but yeah that whole algarve coastline is notorious for that, the cliffs create weird updrafts and the onshore wind just picks up fast. been there twice and both times i kept it low and close. glad you got it back

ive had simialr scares in coastal spots. the thing that saved me was setting a lower wind threshold warning in the app so it at least tells me before i launch. doesnt stop you being an idiot but it helps lol. also now i just dont fly if its above like 18-20 kph near water, not worth it
