so ive been watching fpv videos for like 6 months now and i finally want to pull the trigger on something. my buddy has a DJI avata and it looks cool but everyone on youtube keeps saying build your own if you want the real experience. im not totally sure what that means though because like... i can solder, ive done some electronics hobby stuff, but ive never built a drone before.

main question is like, is the avata or the O3 air unit stuff actually good or is it kind of a walled garden situation where youre locked into their ecosystem forever. i dont want to spend $800 on something and feel limited later. but i also dont want to spend 3 months building something that crashes on its first flight and costs me the same amount anyway.

what would you actually do if you were starting fresh right now

honestly the avata is fine if you just want to fly and not think about it. the goggles 2 integration is solid, O3 link is genuinely low latency, and for a first timer its not a bad way to learn the sticks without also debugging ESC firmware or dealing with betaflight pid tuning. the walled garden thing is real though, you cant just swap in a different VTX or run a different receiver without gutting the whole thing.

if youre into the hobby side of it, building is way more satisfying long term. you end up understanding exactly why your quad flies the way it does and fixing crashes is way cheaper because you just replace the one part that broke. id say start with a decent 5inch BNF like a Iflight Nazgul or even a used Geprc and fly that while you learn betaflight, then build your second one from scratch once you know what you actually want.

i went the build route first and kinda regret it tbh, spent like two months on my first quad and it was a nightmare getting the ESC stack talking to the FC properly. probably wouldve learned faster just flying something prebuilt for a few weeks first. not saying dont build eventually but maybe dont make it your very first thing
