so i just got my first drone like two weeks ago and ive been trying to figure out the rules before i take it out anywhere. i live near the coast in socal and theres a beach i want to fly at but i genuinely cannot tell if its a state beach vs national park vs what. the FAA website kind of explains the federal stuff but then i read that california also has its own rules and some beaches are in like special use airspace and im just totally lost. does anyone know how this actually works in practice or do i need to hire a lawyer lol

ok so the short version is you need to check a few different things and they dont always line up neatly. federal law (FAA) covers airspace, so no matter what beach or state youre in, if youre flying a drone over 250g you need to be registered and follow part 107 rules or the recreational rules depending on what youre doing. but then state and local rules can restrict WHERE you can take off and land even if the airspace is fine. California state beaches are generally managed by California State Parks and a lot of them have explicitly banned drones in recent years. if the beach is adjacent to a national park or federal land thats a whole other layer. i'd seriously just download the B4UFLY app from the FAA and also look up the specific park or beach on the CA State Parks website because they publish their regs. the app wont catch local ordinances but it handles the airspace stuff pretty well.

yeah california is honestly one of the more annoying states for this. i got turned away from point reyes once because a ranger said no drones anywhere in the national seashore and that was that. didnt matter that i had my part 107. state parks vs national parks vs county beaches all have different rules and sometimes the signs dont even say anything about drones so you think youre fine and then someone comes over. i just ask a ranger now before i even unpack anything, saves the headache
