got stopped by security flying near a beach in Greece, whole thing was kinda weird

so this happend last summer and ive been meaning to post about it. was flying my air 2s at this beach outside Heraklion, middle of the afternoon, not near the airport or anything like that, checked everything on the map beforehand. this security guard or maybe he was a cop idk he wasnt in a full uniform comes over and starts asking me stuff in greek and then switches to english and tells me i need a permit. i showed him my EASA registration on my phone because i had done that before the trip and he kind of just looked at it and walked away. no fine, no drone confiscated, just walked away. i honestly dont know if i was actually doing something wrong or if he just didnt know either. flew for another hour after that.

haha this is so relatable. had something similar in Portugal, some guy on a quad bike came over looking very official and then just asked if he could see the live view on my screen. that was it. i think a lot of the time people just want to see whats going on rather than actually enforce anything.

Greece is in the EU so EASA open category registration should generally cover you for recreational flying under 250g or under 900g with certain conditions but the local enforcement is really inconsistent. some areas have additional local rules especially around archaeological sites and certain beaches. sounds like you were probably fine but its one of those situations where nobody really knows including the person stopping you.
