confused about flying near an airport ? do I need to do anything or just stay away

okay so i just got my first drone, mavic mini 3, and i live maybe 4 or 5 miles from a regional airport. not a huge one, just prop planes and the occasional charter flight. i looked it up on the FAA map thing and it shows my area is in class D airspace but i dont fully understand what that means for me practically. like do i just not fly at all? or is there some process i'm supposed to go through? my neighbor flies his drone all the time and says he just stays under 400 feet and thats fine but that doesnt sound right to me. a friend told me about something called LAANC but i couldn't figure out if that's something i download or if its part of an app or what. been trying to research this for two days and getting more confused not less
