Google Earth vs actually showing up - scouting new spots effectively

Been using Google Earth as my main tool for scouting new aerial locations but sometimes I get there and it's totally different than expected. What's your process for virtual scouting vs ground truthing?

I always use Google Earth to virtually scout a location before I even drive there but learned the hard way about checking image dates after showing up to a "perfect" spot that had been developed into condos since the satellite imagery!

How do you balance efficient planning with on-site reality checks?
