so ive been flying freestyle for like two years and finally signed up for a local race next month because my buddy kept bugging me to just do it already. problem is ive only ever flown tracks i set up myself in a field and i just kind of winged the layout every time. never really thought about what counts as proper gate spacing or how tight the turns are supposed to be.

the event page says its a MultiGP chapter race which i looked up and the course has to follow their format but i dont really understand if that means anything for how i should practice. like should i be flying 5 inch or is 3 inch gonna put me at a disadvantage on a standard layout. my 5 inch toothpick feels great indoors but im not sure if the course is gonna be outdoors or in a warehouse and i havent heard back from the organizer yet.

also do most people run their rates way lower for racing vs freestyle or is that a personal thing, ive been flying pretty spicy rates and i feel like i overcook every turn when i try to go fast

MultiGP standard tracks are actually pretty well documented on their site, worth downloading the course design guidelines PDF they have. gate spacing varies by class but for a typical outdoor regional you're looking at gates that feel tighter than you think when you're actually going race pace. the gates are usually 1.5 to 2 meters wide roughly depending on class.

on the rates thing - yeah most racers run lower rates than freestyle guys. not super low but like if you're flipping around at 900 deg/sec you probably want to come down. somewhere in the 600-700 range on pitch and roll is pretty common for tighter technical tracks but honestly it depends how the course flows. some guys run higher on fast open courses. just fly what you've been training on until you've done a few laps and actually see where you're washing out.

5 inch is fine for an outdoor MultiGP race, thats what most people run. dont overthink it, first race is mostly just about not panicking when other quads are in the air around you

I was in almost the exact same spot last year lol, freestyle to racing is a bigger mental shift than I expected. The throttle management especially - I kept chopping throttle on every turn like I do in freestyle and it just kills your momentum on a race course. Smooth is fast and all that stuff people say is actually true it turns out.

The 3 inch vs 5 inch thing probably matters less than just knowing the course layout ahead of time if you can get it. Some chapters post the actual course map before the event. Also if its your first one just focus on clean laps, most newcomers DNF or crash out trying to keep up with people who've been racing for years
