yeah so that happend. coming back into the US from mexico and customs pulled me aside and basically held my fpv quad for like two hours asking questions about it. they eventually gave it back but it was a whole thing. i think it was the lipo batteries honestly, i had four of them in my carry on and i guess that flagged something.

moral of the story i guess is dont be an idiot like me and just look up the battery rules before you fly internationally. i knew the rules i just kind of assumed it would be fine which. it wasnt fine

oof. yeah customs can be really hit or miss with this stuff, ive had zero issues bringing my whole kit through like six different countries and then one time a random airport in spain gave me grief over a single 4s pack. theres no consistency at all

for anyone reading this — the FAA and IATA rules for lithium batteries on planes are pretty specific. generally under 100wh per battery is fine in carry on (not checked), 100-160wh needs airline approval. fpv lipos can get weird because they often dont have wh printed on them so you might need to calculate it yourself before you travel and just write it on a piece of tape on the battery or something. makes the conversation at security way shorter
