anyone done inspection work — wondering how you even get started with that

so i keep hearing that infrastructure inspection is where the real consistent drone money is, like cell towers, roofs, bridges, wind turbines whatever. sounds way more stable than chasing real estate listings. but i have no idea how you actually break into that kind of work. do companies hire you direct or is it through some platform or do you need extra certifications on top of 107.

i looked into DroneBase and a couple similar platforms a while back but the payout per mission always seemed kind of low to me, like is that just how it starts and you work up from there or are those platforms kind of a dead end. genuinely curious how people got their foot in the door with the more industrial type clients

the platforms are fine for building hours and getting used to deliverables but yeah the pay is pretty meh. where the real money is is going direct to the companies needing the work done — roofing contractors, insurance adjusters, telecom companies. cold outreach is annoying but it works. i sent probably 40 emails before i got my first real inspection contract and now that same client gives me work every few months without me having to ask.

extra certs definitely help depending on the niche, like if you want to do tower work some clients want you to have specific safety training even if youre not climbing. and for things like thermography you'd want a thermal cert to really sell yourself. but honestly for basic roof and property inspections the 107 is enough to get started, you just gotta show up professional and deliver clean reports.

i tried the platform route for maybe 6 months. the missions are fine practice but i never felt like it was going anywhere career wise, always felt like i was just doing piecework for someone elses contract. switched to pitching local insurance agencies directly and that went better. takes longer to get traction but the relationships actually stick. also side note — if you have any background in construction or engineering that helps a ton when talking to industrial clients, they want to know you understand what youre actually looking at not just that you can fly the drone safely
