got questioned by security at an airport for having batteries in my bag — bit of a nightmare

this happened last week flying back from japan and i still cant decide if it was my fault or just overzealous security. i had three lipo packs in my carry on all under 100wh which is fine by most airline rules including the one i was on, i checked twice. but the screening guy pulled me aside and said i needed documentation proving the watt hour rating for each one.

i had the original dji battery boxes in my bag luckily and the specs were printed on them so they let me through after like 20 minutes but it was stressful. the thing is i flew out with the same setup and nobody said a word. anyway just a heads up if youre travelling with multiple packs — maybe print out the spec sheet or take a photo of the battery label on your phone just in case someone decides to be thorough about it

ive heard japan is stricter about this than most places even though technically the rules are the same IATA standard. had a similar thing happen to a mate in tokyo narita, they made him declare each battery separately on some form. not sure if its an official policy or just how individual agents interpret it. either way yeah keeping photos of the spec sheets is just smart at this point

wait so they can actually stop you even if youre under the limit?? i was planing to bring two mavic batteries on my next flight and i didnt even think about needing documentation. i just assumed the airline website saying under 100wh is fine meant you just... bring them and thats it
