anyone travel with a drone internationally without checking regs first and regret it

asking for a friend basically. going to Thailand in a few months and i keep telling myself ill look into the rules before i go but i also kind of just want to throw the Mavic in the bag and figure it out when i get there. ive heard its pretty relaxed but also heard someone got their drone confiscated at the airport so now im not sure what to believe.

like how serious are they actually about this stuff at the border

dont do it man. Thailand requires you to register with the NCAT or whatever they call it now and you technically need to do it before you arrive. the confiscation thing is real, i know someone who had to leave their Phantom at customs in Bangkok and fight to get it back. it was a whole thing. just spend an hour on the CAAT website and do the registration, its annoying but worth it.

I went last year and honestly just registered online before I left, took maybe 45 mins and cost basically nothing. Flying near temples is a different story though, a lot of them have their own no-drone rules that arent on any official map, you just kind of have to read the signs or ask. Chiang Mai was great for flying, lots of open countryside if you get outside the city a bit.
