anyone actually getting consistent work from drone job platforms or is it mostly a waste of time

been seeing ads for a few of those platforms that match drone pilots with clients — you know the ones, they take a cut and handle the client side and you just show up and fly basically. curious if anyone here has actually used them for more than like one or two gigs.

the concept seems fine in theory but i talked to a guy at a fly-in last month who said the pay was pretty low on some of them and by the time you factor in travel and your equipment costs its not really worth it. but then someone else told me they get like 4-5 jobs a month through one of them and its good supplemental income. hard to know whos situation is more typical i guess.

im not trying to replace my main freelance clients with this, more just wondering if its worth registering on a couple of them to fill in the gaps between bigger jobs. anyone with actual experience would be helpful, not just general opinions about whether platforms like this are good or bad in the abstract

used one of the bigger ones for about six months. the work is real and consistent which is nice, but yeah the pay reflects that its kind of commoditized. i was doing mostly insurance inspection stuff through them which isnt glamorous but its straightforward flying and they handle all the client communication which honestly has some value when you've dealt with nightmare clients on your own. i stopped using it not because it was bad but because my own client base grew enough that i didnt need it. i'd say its a decent way to get hours and build a portfolio early on even if the money isnt great

the one i tried kept sending me missions that were like 90 minutes away and the payout wasnt accounting for that drive at all. maybe works better if you're in a dense urban area where the jobs are actually nearby. i gave up on it pretty quick but i know people in bigger cities who swear by it so location probably matters a lot more than anything else with these platforms
