so anyway i finally landed what i thought was going to be a clean easy gig — a local contractor wanted aerial progress shots of a housing development, like monthly stuff, sounded super straightforward. showed up the first time and the site foreman had no idea a drone pilot was coming, nobody had told him, and he was NOT happy about it. spent like 45 minutes just standing around while my client was unreachable by phone.

eventually got clearance to fly but by then the light was completely wrong and i was rushing and honestly the footage was just okay. not bad but not what i wanted to deliver. client seemed fine with it but i felt weird about the whole thing. i think i just assumed the client would handle the on-site coordination stuff and obviously i should have confirmed all of that myself beforehand. lesson learned i guess. anyone else had jobs go sideways like this early on, does it get easier to manage the non-flying parts of the work?

oh man yes, the non-flying logistics stuff is genuinely harder than the actual flying for most commercial work. i always send a confirmation email to the client the day before that basically lists out exactly who is meeting me, what time, and who has cleared it with anyone on site. sounds overly formal but it saves so much grief. you kind of have to treat yourself like a contractor not just a creative, people will assume you'll figure it out if you don't spell it out first.

the light thing would have killed me, i am way too precious about golden hour stuff for my own good commercially speaking. but yeah client communication is a whole skill set that nobody talks about when they're telling you to go get your 107. half the job is managing expecations and logistics and the flying is almost the easy part once you've been doing it a while.
