so this kind of came out of nowhere. a mid-sized civil engineering firm reached out after seeing some of my mapping work i posted, they want someone basically full time to handle site surveys, progress documentation, and some geospatial stuff i honestly only have middling experience with. they mentioned photogrammetry a lot in the interview which i can do but im not like an expert by any means.

the pay is actually decent, not amazing but it comes with benefits which as a freelancer ive just been eating the cost of health insurance myself so thats significant. my concern is whether i'd be pigeonholed doing the same survey loop forever or if theres actual growth. also they mentioned wanting someone who could eventually manage a small fleet and maybe train other staff, which sounds good on paper but i dont know if thats real or just interview talk.

anyone been in a staff role like this vs staying freelance? i kind of like the freedom of freelance but the stability sounds really appealing right now if im honest

the fleet management and training stuff is usually real at engineering firms in my experience, they tend to mean it because they genuinely dont have internal people who know this stuff. thats actually a good sign imo. what id ask before signing is whether they have a dedicated budget for equipment upgrades and training or if youll be fighting for it every year. ive seen people get stuck flying the same aging M300 setup because procurement is a nightmare and suddenly your skills arent keeping up with the industry.

also clarify who owns the data workflows. if youre building all the processing pipelines in something like Metashape or DJI Terra and then they own all of it with no credit to you, just make sure youre okay with that. not saying its a dealbreaker just worth knowing going in.

i left a staff gig at a surveying company after two years and went back to freelance and honestly i dont regret it but the bennies were hard to give up, especially the insurance thing you mentioned. if the company seems like they actually value the role and arent just trying to get a cheap drone guy to check a box, id probably take it. you can always freelance again later but a solid resume line from an engineering firm opens doors
