got stopped by a park ranger in Colorado, share your stories

so anyway this happened last weekend and im still kind of annoyed about it. was out near Rocky Mountain National Park, technically i was outside the boundary — like i had checked on the map and i was good — but this ranger pulls up and just assumes im flying inside the park and starts going off. took like 20 minutes to sort out and he still seemed skeptical when he left

i had my TRUST cert on my phone and everything, showed him the airspace app. not sure he really understood any of it honestly. didnt get fined or anything but still ruined the vibe. anyone else dealt with stuff like this traveling around

yeah this happens a lot at national parks, rangers are not trained on airspace rules and they just default to "no drones" because thats the NPS policy inside parks. problem is like you said the boundary isnt always obvious on the ground. i now screenshot my exact GPS position on the map before i launch so i have timestamped proof if anyone comes over. probably wouldnt hold up in any real legal situation but its usually enough to end the conversation

honestly the ranger was probably just doing his job even if he got it wrong. i get frustrated too but these guys deal with so many people doing actually illegal stuff that they're suspicious of everyone. the airspace thing is genuinely confusing even for people who fly regularly, cant really blame someone whos not in the hobby for not knowing the difference between NPS airspace and FAA airspace

that said yeah its annoying when you did everything right lol
