flying at the beach in portugal last week — some thoughts

so i was in the algarve for a couple weeks and brought my mini 3 pro along, figured id get some coastal shots. honestly the whole experience was kind of a mixed bag. the scenery was unreal obviously but the wind off the atlantic was brutal most mornings, like constant 25-30kph gusts and my bird was getting thrown around way more than i expected for a smaller drone.

also had a park ranger type guy come up to me on the second day and start asking questions, couldnt really understand his portuguese but he seemed pretty annoyed. i had done some research before going and thought i was legal to fly there but maybe i missed something about that particular beach area. ended up just packing up to avoid a confrontation. anyone dealt with regulations in portugal before? its a bit confusing with the EU drone rules versus whatever local stuff they have going on

yeah portugal is actually one of the trickier ones in europe even though technically theyre under EASA rules like everyone else. a lot of the coastal areas near nature reserves are restricted and the boundaries arent always obvious on maps. i use both the official ENAC portugal site and drone assist to double check before i fly anywhere near the coast there. the ranger was probably right to question you tbh, some of those beaches near sagres are protected zones.

the wind thing is real though, i went in october thinking itd be calmer and it was worse. morning was slightly better for me, like the first hour after sunrise before the sea breeze picks up
