anyone done work through drone service marketplaces — worth it or just a race to the bottom

been seeing a lot of these platforms pop up where clients post drone jobs and pilots bid on them. Dronebase, Zeitview, some others I cant even remember the names of. a colleague mentioned one the other day i hadnt heard of. curious if anyone here has actually used them for a meaningful chunk of their income or if its mostly low budget stuff that undercuts what you could charge going direct to clients.

my concern is that if everyones competing on price it just drives rates into the ground for everyone. but at the same time finding clients on your own takes forever especially when youre starting out and maybe a marketplace is a decent way to get reps and build a portfolio even if the margins arent great

used Dronebase pretty regularly for about a year. the work is consistent which is genuinely nice when youre starting out and dont have your own client base yet, but the pay per mission is pretty fixed and not amazing. like you know exactly what youre gonna make which removes the negotiation stress but it also caps your upside. some missions are straightforward and quick, others you show up and theres access issues or the deliverables requirements are more involved than the brief suggested. the support from the platform when things go sideways is hit or miss.

i still do the occasional mission through them when im having a slow week but i stopped treating it as a primary income source once i built up enough direct relationships. i think of it now as gap filler work more than anything. for building a portfolio and getting comfortable with different job types though it was genuinely useful starting out, no regrets there

the race to the bottom thing is real on some of the smaller generic freelance platforms, like if you look at Fiverr or Upwork for drone stuff its kind of a mess. the dedicated drone marketplaces are a bit more structured at least. Zeitview (used to be DroneView I think?) tends toward more infrastructure and utility type work which pays better per job in my experience but you need to have the right gear and insurance coverage they require which not everyone does right away
