anyone here do infrastructure inspection work — is it actually as steady as people say

heard a guy at a fly-in a few weeks back talking about how inspection work for utilities and cell towers and stuff like that is basically recession proof and you can stay booked solid if you get in with the right contractors. he made it sound almost too good. im skeptical but also curious because the real estate and wedding market around here feels pretty saturated and im trying to figure out where else to take this.

i fly a mavic 3 pro right now which i know probably isnt the right tool for serious inspection stuff, and i dont have any kind of thermography cert or anything like that. so i guess im also wondering how much extra training and gear investment you actually need to get into that world before you see any real return on it.

the guy wasnt wrong but he probably left out some important context. yeah utility and telecom inspection work is steady and pays way better than real estate, but getting those contracts isnt just about showing up with a drone. most of the bigger utility companies want you to go through their approved vendor list which can take forever, and they often have pretty specific requirements around insurance minimums — we're talking $2-5 million sometimes — and documented flight hours in specific conditions. it's not impossible to break in but its definitely not like signing up on a platform and waiting for jobs to roll in.

the mavic 3 pro is fine for a lot of visual inspection stuff actually, don't let people tell you you need a massive enterprise rig right away. thermography is a different story though, that equipment and training adds up fast. if i were starting out trying to get into inspection id probably look for a local company doing that work and try to get hired on as a second pilot or ground crew just to get experience and understand how the workflows actually run before going independent.

i did some cell tower work for about six months through a contractor and honestly it was fine but not glamorous lol. a lot of hurry up and wait, driving to sites that are in the middle of nowhere, and the actual flight time per job is sometimes not that much. pay was decent though and consistent which was nice after the feast or famine of doing event stuff. the insurance thing the other person mentioned is real, that was the biggest headache for me getting set up.
