flew my mavic in iceland last month, some stuff you should know

  • Members

so i just got back from two weeks in iceland and brought my mini 3 pro along. honestly it was one of the best decisions ive ever made but also the most stressful flying ive done. wind there is absolutely no joke, like i had the drone in sport mode just to hold position over some of the coastal spots near vik. nearly lost it twice.

the rules thing is a bit confusing if you dont research ahead. a lot of the national parks are either fully restricted or you need to register with the environment agency of iceland beforehand which nobody tells you about. i got lucky and a ranger just waved me off with a warning but i know someone who got fined. airspace around reykjavik is restricted pretty strictly too so check your app but also verify manually because not everything shows up correctly.

weather windows there are tiny. you get maybe 20-30 minutes of calm and then it just comes out of nowhere. had to do a lot of early morning flights around 5am when wind was lowest. totally worth it though the light at that hour is insane.

yeah the wind in iceland is not something you can prepare for mentally until youre actually there. i went two years ago with my phantom 4 and honestly the drone handled it better than i expected but i was still sweating the whole time. did you get anything near the geysir area? thats supposed to be restricted too but i saw people flying there when i visited.

this is super helpful im planning a trip there for next spring. one question though — do you need a specific license to fly there as a tourist or does your home country certification count for anything? i have my a2 cof c from the uk and have no idea if that means anything outside europe at this point
