ok so ive been reading through the FAA updates and the DJI press release about remote ID compliance and honestly im more confused than when i started. like i get the basic idea, your drone broadcasts its location and your location, fine. but what im not clear on is whether my older mini 2 is actually going to be non-compliant to fly without a module or if theres some grandfather clause thing still in effect.

also saw something about DJI dropping a new module that supposedly plugs into older birds but the price point seemed kinda steep for what it is. anyone been keeping up with this more closely than me? i mostly fly for fun on weekends so i dont want to drop money on stuff if i can avoid it but also dont want to get fined obviously

The Mini 2 is actually under 250g so it falls into a different category ? you still need to follow remote ID rules in controlled airspace but the broadcast module requirement works a bit differently for sub-250g birds. Honestly the FAA's own website has a decent breakdown if you search for the remote ID FAQ page, it's clearer than most of the third party writeups floating around.

The DJI module thing is real, it's the Remote ID module they released for older Mavic and Air series stuff. Not cheap but if you're flying anything that needs it regularly it's probably worth it just for peace of mind. Enforcement is still kind of patchy from what i've heard but that won't last forever.

same boat honestly, i just started flying last spring and all this compliance stuff is a lot to take in on top of everything else. my LFS guy told me not to stress too much yet because enforcement ramp-up is slow but idk i feel like that's the kind of advice that gets people in trouble later lol
