what ND filters are actually worth getting for the mini 3

  • Members

ok so i've been shooting with my mini 3 (not the pro, just the regular one) for a while now and someone at a meetup told me i really need ND filters if i want the footage to look less like garbage. i shoot mostly on sunny days, beach stuff and some hiking. i looked online and theres like a million options at every price range and i genuinely have no idea where to start. do i need the whole set or is there like a couple that cover most situations. budget isnt huge, dont want to spend more than like 50-60 bucks if i can help it

honestly for sunny beach shooting you'll probably live on an ND16 and ND64 most of the time. the 16 for like partly cloudy or later in the day and the 64 when its really bright. the 180 degree shutter rule is what youre going for, so if youre shooting 4k30 you want your shutter at 1/60 and the ND gets you there without blowing the exposure. for your budget id look at Freewell or Kase, both make mini 3 specific sets that are around that price. stay away from the super cheap no-name stuff on amazon, had one that had a slight color cast that was a pain to correct in post

the Freewell 4-pack is like $45-50 and its what most people recommend in that price range. comes with an ND8 ND16 ND64 and ND256 i think. covers pretty much everything. i use the 64 probably 80% of the time. just double check they have a version specifically for the mini 3 not the pro, the lenses are diffrent so the filters arent interchangeable
