so my buddy keeps telling me to just grab a DJI FPV combo and call it a day but something about that feels like cheating? idk. ive been flying cinewhoops at the park for like 3 months on a borrowed quad and i actually want to get into real freestyle but everyone i talk to in person just says buy whatever and figure it out which isnt helpful at all

the DJI FPV is like $999 and yeah it has obstacle avoidance and all that but its also kind of a locked ecosystem and from what i read you cant really swap parts if you crash it hard which like... i will crash it. a lot probably. so is there any actual reason to go that route over just building something or grabbing like a nazgul or something prebuilt that you can actually fix

honestly the DJI FPV is fine for what it is but its not really an FPV drone in the way the community means it. its more like a fast camera drone with goggles. you cant really tune it, cant swap motors easily, and if you binch the frame youre basically buying a new unit. for someone who actually wants to learn freestyle id say skip it entirely

nazgul5 v3 or something from iflight is the move if you want prebuilt and dont want to mess with builds yet. runs betaflight so you can actually tune it, parts are standard, and you wont cry as much when you bin it into concrete. pair it with the DJI O3 or even walksnail and youre in way better shape than that locked DJI system

i went through basically this exact thing last year lol. ended up getting the DJI fpv first and tbh i dont regret it for getting comfortable with orientation and throttle management but i outgrew it pretty fast. sold it for like 600 and put that toward a custom 5inch and wished id just done that from the start. the horizon mode on the DJI thing is nice for easing in but once you want acro its just kind of in the way
