Group flights vs solo - safety concerns?

  • Members

Been flying solo for about 6 months now and thinking about joining some group fly-ins. But I keep hearing horror stories about mid-air collisions and interference issues when multiple drones are up.

How do experienced groups handle air traffic management? Do you assign altitude levels? Use different frequencies? I've gotten comfortable with my own flying but the thought of 8-10 drones in the same airspace makes me anxious.

Anyone have actual experience with group flight protocols?

Valid concerns! Good groups establish clear rules - usually altitude separation (someone calls out "taking 200 feet" before ascending) and designated flight zones. We also do radio checks before flying and have a spotter system.

I was worried about the same thing but honestly it's usually way more organized than you'd think. Most meetups have someone acting as informal "air traffic control" and everyone's pretty good about communication. Way safer than I expected.

Depends entirely on the group leadership. I've seen both ends - some groups are super organized with proper briefings, others are just a free-for-all. Ask about their safety protocols before showing up. A good group will have clear answers.
