is the part 107 test actually worth it if you only fly recreationally

okay so my brother in law keeps telling me i should get my part 107 even though i only fly for fun, no commercial work or anything. i have a mini 3 and just do it on weekends mostly. he says it gives you more flexibility with airspace but im not totally sure thats true and i dont really want to spend the time studying for a whole test if i dont need it.

from what ive read you can use LAANC as a recreational flyer anyway so i dont know what the actual benefit would be. is there something im missing or is he kind of overstating it. genuinely asking because i have no idea what half the rules even mean for recreational vs certified

your brother in law isnt totally wrong but hes not totally right either. as a recreational flyer under the exception you do get LAANC access so for most normal airspace situations youre covered without 107. the main thing 107 actually gets you is the ability to fly in ways that recreational rules dont allow ? like flying over people, flying at night without a waiver, and obviously any commercial work. if youre just doing weekend hobby flights and not trying to do anything exotic, the recreational path with LAANC is genuinely fine for most people.

that said the test isnt that bad once you sit down and study it. i got mine mostly because i wanted to understand the rules better and it did change how i think about airspace. not saying its useless, just that you should have a real reason to do it beyond someone telling you to

i mean i got my 107 and i still barely use the extra stuff it allows if im honest. the studying was kind of interesting just to know what im actually supposed to be doing up there. but yeah if youre purely recreational theres not a huge urgent reason. depends if you ever think you might want to do any paid work even like one time, because then you need it no matter what and its easier to just have it already.
