ok so this is kind of embarrassing but i went out to this spot last weekend, its a state park area near a river, and i checked the B4UFLY app before going and it showed clear. flew for maybe 40 minutes, got some really nice footage. when i got home i was looking at the area more carefully on a different app and noticed there was apparently a national wildlife refuge boundary that covers part of where i was. not airspace restriction exactly but i think there are rules about flying over those?

nobody said anything to me while i was there, no ranger came by, nothing. but now im reading stuff online about how the rules around wildlife refuges are kind of a gray area and some of them have their own specific rules posted at the entrance or whatever. i genuinely did not see any signs. do i need to worry about this or am i overthinking it

wildlife refuges are a bit of a weird one. the FAA controls the airspace so technically if your app showed clear and you were legal on the airspace side youre probably fine from a federal aviation standpoint. but the US Fish and Wildlife Service can have their own regulations about drone use within refuge boundaries that are separate from FAA stuff entirely. some refuges have outright bans, some require permits, some dont say anything at all. its honestly a mess and the signage is almost never consistent.

if nothing happened and you werent doing anything that would disturb nesting areas or whatever id probably not lose sleep over it but its worth looking up the specific refuge name on the USFWS site before you go back

im kind of in the same boat with this stuff tbh. the number of different layers of rules you have to check before flying anywhere is kind of insane when you think about it. FAA airspace, state parks regs, local ordinances, federal land management rules... i feel like ive done everything right and still ended up somewhere i wasnt supposed to be at least twice. not making excuses just, its a lot to keep track of
