camera settings for golden hour shots ? always coming out too orange??

  • Members

ok so ive been flying for about 8 months now mostly just for fun but lately ive been trying to get more serious about the actual photography side of things. my shots during golden hour always look way too warm, like almost neon orange sometimes, and i cant figure out if its a white balance thing or if im doing something wrong in post

im shooting in D-Log on my mini 4 pro and i thought that was supposed to give me more flexibility in editing but honestly the footage looks flat and weird and then when i try to correct it in lightroom it just goes orange and blown out. im not sure if im supposed to be setting a manual white balance before i take off or just leaving it on auto and fixing it later

also not sure what ISO to be shooting at during golden hour ? i keep reading conflicting stuff. some people say keep ISO as low as possible always, others say its fine to bump it up a bit if the shutter speed is right. any advice appreciated, been at this for a few weeks and its driving me nuts

the white balance thing is totally your issue ? auto WB during golden hour is basically useless because the camera keeps trying to correct the warmth and it just fights itself the whole time. set a manual kelvin value before you take off, something around 5500-6000k is a decent starting point for golden hour and then you can fine tune in post but at least you have a consistent baseline across all your shots

also with D-Log you need to make sure youre applying the right LUT before you start grading otherwise yeah it's gonna look completely wrong. DJI has their official D-Log to Rec709 LUT on their site, start with that and then do your color work on top of it. once i started doing it that way my golden hour stuff got like 10x better almost immediately

ISO thing ? just keep it at 100 if you can. golden hour is usually bright enough that you shouldnt need to push it unless the sun is almost fully down. i try to stick to the 180 degree shutter rule so shutter speed is double my frame rate, and then just adjust aperture to get the exposure right. honestly though i shoot in jpeg still and my golden hour shots look fine so maybe dont overthink the log stuff if its stressing you out lol
