been flying for about 8 months now, mostly parks and open fields. a guy at my local club keeps telling me i should be using a landing pad and i kind of brushed it off but then i had a close call last week where the sensors got confused on a slightly uneven gravel patch and the drone almost tipped on landing. nothing broke but it shook me a bit.

are these things actually useful day to day or is it more of a nice to have. i see the hoodman ones and some no-name ones on amazon for like 15 dollars and i cant really tell whats different beyond the material. also wondering if anyone uses them in wind because it seems like a lightweight pad would just blow away the second you put it down

yeah the wind thing is a real issue with the cheap ones, had mine flip over mid-flight once and nearly caused a problem. what i do now is just step on two of the edges when i set it up, or if its really gusty i'll put my bag on one corner. the hoodman ones are heavier and have a slightly textured bottom which helps grip to grass but even those move around in anything above like 15mph.

that said i genuinely think its worth having one even a cheap one. the main thing for me isnt really the drone protection, its more that i always know exactly where im landing and the ground clearance on takeoff is cleaner. avoids all the little bits of grass and gravel getting sucked toward the props. after that incident you described i think youd appreciate having a known flat surface to come back to.

honestly i thought the same thing before i got one and now i wont fly without it. the cheap amazon ones are fine to start, i used one for almost a year before upgrading. the main differnce with the better ones is they fold up smaller and the material doesnt crinkle as loud when theres wind, which sounds dumb but it matters when youre trying to hear the drone. also the orange color on mine makes it way easier to orient myself when im flying further out and coming back in.
