so i just got my mini 3 like two weeks ago and im still figuring everything out. took it to a park near my house and when i opened the dji fly app it said something about controlled airspace and a red zone or something. i didnt actually try to take off because i got nervous but now im wondering if i was even close to doing something illegal or if the app was just being overly cautious.

the park is maybe like 3 miles from a small regional airport, not a major one, just the kind that has prop planes and small stuff. does that still count? i looked up LAANC but honestly did not understand half of what i was reading. do i need to like apply for something every single time i want to fly or is there a way to just check if a spot is okay before i drive out there

yeah the app warnings are real and you were right to not just ignore it. anything within like 5 miles of an airport ? even a tiny one ? is going to fall under controlled airspace and you technically need authorization. LAANC is the system that handles that, its actually not as complicated as it sounds once you go through it once. you basically use an app like Aloft or even just the DJI app itself can request authorization in certain areas and you get approval in like seconds sometimes.

the thing people dont realize is that not every spot within that radius is a hard no, they have altitude limits grid by grid. some spots might be approved for 100ft, some 200, and some are genuinely zero and you cant get auto-approval for those. before you go anywhere just pull up the B4UFLY app or Aloft and check the grid for where you want to fly. saves a lot of guessing.

same thing happened to me when i first started lol. i just drove to a field i thought was in the middle of nowhere and the app freaked out. turns out theres a tiny airstrip i had no idea about. anyway yeah check the maps beforehand, i use Aloft now before every single flight just to make sure. once you do the LAANC thing a couple times it becomes second nature honestly
