i keep seeing ads for platforms that connect pilots with clients and im curious if anyone has actually used them and gotten consistent work. i wont name names but you probably know the ones im talking about. my part 107 is current and ive been doing mostly volunteer and personal project stuff but want to start making some money with this.

the thing that makes me nervous is i dont know if clients on those platforms are serious or just kicking tires, and i also dont know what the pay rates are like. also do you need a bunch of five star reviews before anyone even looks at your profile or is it possible to get traction as a new listing. feels a bit like starting on etsy where the algorithm buries you until you already have momentum which is kind of a catch 22.

tried a couple of them a few years back and had mixed results. got a few jobs but the platform takes a cut and the clients who come through those marketplaces sometimes have no idea what drone work actually costs so you end up either racing to the bottom on price or just not getting picked. i found way better traction just reaching out directly to local real estate agencies and small construction companies. more work upfront but the clients are better and you actually build a relationship instead of being a commodity on a list.

i used one for about 8 months when i was just starting out and honestly it wasnt bad as a way to get some early jobs on the books and build a portfolio. pay wasnt great and yeah the cut they take stings but it got me out flying for money which helped a ton with confidence. i wouldnt rely on it forever but as a starting pont while you build your own client base it served its purpose for me. just dont expect it to be passive income or anything, you have to stay active on the profile and respond to inquiries super fast or you miss jobs.
