so ive been flying my mavic for about two years now just recreationally, always follow the rules, register my stuff, use b4ufly, all that. a buddy of mine keeps telling me to get the 107 cert even though i dont really plan on doing paid work anytime soon. his argument is basically that its good to have and it opens doors but i dunno if i want to spend the money on the test and all those hours studying airspace regulations for something i might never actually use professionally.

i guess my question is does having the cert change anything about how you fly recreationally or is it purely for commercial stuff. also curious if anyone here studied for it and then just never ended up using it for commercial work, like was it at least interesting to learn or just a grind.

i got mine about a year before i did any paid work and honestly the studying did make me a better pilot, not because of stick skills but just knowing why certain rules exist. like i actually understood airspace after studying for the test in a way that just flying recreationally never forced me to. that said if you genuinely have zero interest in commercial work and the $175 test fee stings, i wouldnt call it essential. its not like having the cert changes what airspace you can access as a recreational flyer, LAANC still works the same way for you.

eh i mean the test itself isnt that bad, took me maybe 3 weeks of casual studying. but i'll be real, if youre only flying for fun the cert doesnt do a whole lot practically. where it might matter is if you ever want to fly in controlled airspace for something like a wedding or a real estate thing even as a one-off favor for a friend, technically if youre getting paid anything at all you need it. so it depends on whether you think that scenario is realistic for you. i sort of got mine as a just in case thing and im glad i did but i get that its not for everyone.
