so ive been flying for about two years now mostly with my mavic 3 and lately ive been trying to push myself to fly in worse conditions to get better at it. did a session yesterday where gusts were hitting maybe 25-28 mph and the drone was handling it okay but i was burning through battery way faster than normal and the footage was kind of garbage anyway because of the shake. got me thinking about where the line is.

like i know the specs say the mavic 3 can handle up to 27 mph wind resistance but thats not really the same as actually flying in it comfortably right? especially near any structures or trees where the wind does weird things. had a moment yesterday where it just got pushed sideways pretty hard coming around a building corner and my heart kind of stopped for a second.

do you guys have a rule of thumb or do you just feel it out every time? im trying to figure out if theres actual technique here or if its just experience

honestly the spec sheet wind resistance numbers are basically a joke for anything other than hovering in open space. what they dont tell you is that turbulence near obstacles is way more dangerous than sustained wind speed because the flight controller cant predict a sudden gust the way it can compensate for steady pressure.

my personal rule is if im seeing more than about 20% variation in wind speed over a 30 second period ? so gusts significantly above the average ? i start thinking about whether its worth it. you can check this in something like UAV Forecast or even just watch the trees. steady sway is manageable, random violent movements mean the air is chaotic and the drone is going to work hard and probably drift unpredictably.

the corner turbulence thing you described is real and it catches people off guard. when wind hits a building it accelerates and does unpredictable stuff on the lee side. i now always add a big buffer when flying near structures in any meaningful wind.

yeah the battery drain is actually a good warning sign that i use too, if im burning through it noticeably faster than usual then the motors are working overtime and im also just not gonna get useful footage so why bother. had a similar thing happen with my mini 3 pro, specs say 38 kph resistance or whatever but in actual gusty conditions that thing was fighting hard at like half that speed
