So ive been doing monthly progress documentation for a mid-size construction company for about 8 months now, mostly using DroneDeploy because thats what they were already paying for when they brought me on. It works fine, the automated flight plans are easy and the clients like the 2D maps but im starting to wonder if im leaving quality on the table.

A buddy of mine swears by Pix4D for anything involving actual measurements or volumetric calculations and he sent me some comparison outputs from the same site flown the same day and honestly the point cloud density looked noticeably better in Pix4D. Could have been his overlap settings though, he runs like 80/75 front/side which is higher than what I usually do.

Genuinely curious if anyone has switched between the two mid-project or runs both. The licensing cost difference is real and I dont want to just throw money at it if DroneDeploy is fine for what this client actually needs.

ran both for about a year at a civil engineering firm and honestly it depends so much on what deliverable the client actually wants. for simple orthomosaic and progress photos DroneDeploy is totally fine and the web interface is way easier to hand off to a non-technical client. but if you're doing cut/fill calculations or need to export a dense point cloud that an engineer is going to actually load into something like Civil 3D, pix4d wins pretty clearly in my experience. the GCP workflow is also just more robust in pix4d, especially if you're doing anything that needs to be survey-grade accurate.

the overlap thing your buddy mentioned is real btw. 80/75 makes a huge difference in point cloud quality vs the default 75/65 or whatever dronedeploy defaults to. adds flight time but worth it if accuracy matters.

i switched to Pix4D about a year ago and havent looked back but i do mostly agricultural stuff so maybe not the same use case. the subscription pricing did hurt though ngl
