ok so i bought a DJI Mini 2 last week and ive been watching youtube videos for like 3 days straight but im still confused about a few things. first off the return to home thing ? does it actually work reliably or is that one of those things thats just kind of a backup you hope you never need. also how do I know when its safe to fly, like the app shows all this airspace stuff and some of it is yellow and some is green and i genuinely dont understand what the colors mean.

i live near a small regional airport, not like a major one, and im not sure if that changes anything. ive only hovered it in my backyard so far because im too nervous to actually fly it anywhere. any advice for someone who is completely new to this would be really appreciated, i dont want to crash it on day one lol

the RTH works pretty well honestly, especially on the Mini 2, but you definitely want to make sure it gets a good GPS lock before you take off. if you launch before it has enough satellites it might not have a reliable home point stored. i always wait for at least 10-12 satellites showing in the app before i do anything. and yeah the yellow zones near airports mean you need authorization before flying there, green is fine. the app you want is called B4UFLY or just use the built in map in DJI fly, it'll tell you if you need to submit a request through LAANC which sounds complicated but is actually pretty quick once youve done it once.

hovering in the backyard first is exactly the right call. a lot of people rush out and end up putting it in a tree on day two. take your time getting used to how it responds to inputs before going anywhere open.

im pretty new too so take this with a grain of salt but i think the yellow airspace near airports usually has an altitude ceiling, like maybe you can still fly but only up to 100 feet or something. the DJI fly app should show you the specifics when you tap on the zone. i was confused about the same thing when i started and someone here helped me out
