so ive been putting together my first real 5inch freestyle build, been flying whoops and 3inch for about a year so im not totally new but this is my first time doing a full from-scratch 5inch. running a apex hd frame, kakute h7 stack, and picked up some emax eco2 2306 motors cause they were on sale. props are gemfan 51433.

thing flies great honestly, way more punch than i expected coming from smaller stuff. but after maybe 3 packs back to back the motors are getting pretty hot to touch, like id say uncomfortably hot. not burning but definitely warmer than i remember people saying they should be. im running 4s. wondering if its the motors being underspec'd for the props or if my pid tune is fighting itself. or maybe the ecospeed escs in the stack are doing something weird with timing. havent touched motor timing at all, just left it at what betaflight auto suggested.

throttle mid on the packs is probably around 40-50% since im still learning freestyle. not doing long sustained full throttle runs or anything like that.

eco2s are decent motors but theyre not exactly known for running super cool, especially on 51433s which pull a fair amount of current. whats your motor kv? if youre on the 2400kv version those are really more of a 4s motor but they still run warm. try logging your motor outputs in blackbox and see if any of them are consistently higher than the others, might have a pid issue making one axis work harder. also check your motor screws arent too long and hitting the windings, sounds dumb but ive seen it cause heat issues before.

i had the same thing happen on my first 5inch and it turned out my filters were way too aggressive so the craft was kinda oscillating slightly and the motors were fighting it constantly. couldnt really see it visually just felt slightly buzzy in the googles. dropped the d term a bit and cleaned up the filtering and temps went down noticeably. also 3 packs back to back in summer heat without letting them breathe is gonna warm anything up tbh
