ok so ive been lurking here for like 8 months watching builds and i finally pulled the trigger on my own 5inch freestyle quad. running a apex frame, 2306 2450kv motors, 45a blheli32 escs, f7 stack i grabbed off getfpv. bound it up to my radio, got betaflight dialed in... or so i thought.

thing is it just feels wrong in the air. super twitchy on roll and pitch, like i barely touch the stick and it snaps way too hard. and then when i let go it kind of oscillates before settling. ive been messing with the rates for like two days and i cant figure out if its a rates problem or a pid problem or something with my filter setup. im on 4.3 btw. also running bisected props which maybe was a mistake i dunno.

i dont have a blackbox module yet so im kind of flying blind on the tuning side which probably makes this harder. anyone been through this kind of thing on a first build? is there a good starting point i should have used instead of just messing with random stuff

the oscillation on stick release is almost definitely your D term being too low or your P being too high ? classic first tune issue. on 4.3 the default PIDs are actually not bad but if you copied settings from somewhere online they might be off for your motor/prop combo. 2450kv on 4s with what size props? that matters a lot.

also get blackbox sorted before you do anything else honestly. flying blind and tweaking is just guessing. even logging one flight and looking at the gyro traces will tell you immediately whats happening. there are free tools that make it readable, its not as scary as it sounds. RPM filter on? if your ESCs are doing bidirectional dshot that should be enabled, it makes a massive difference on the high frequency stuff.

had almost the exact same thing on my first 5inch lol. for me it turned out my rates were way too aggressive ? i had copied some pro freestyle rates from a youtube video and obviously i dont have the stick precision those guys have so everything felt snappy and out of control. dropped my expo way down and set center sensitivity lower and it felt completely different. not fixed but way more manageable while i learned.

the oscillations though yeah thats probably pid related like the other guy said. i just ran the betaflight preset for my motor size and it got me close enough to actually fly and tune from there rather than starting from scratch
