yeah this has been bugging me for a while and i finally decided to post about it. running a DJI RS3 on a custom ground vehicle rig (i know, not technically a drone but the gimbal community seems to be mostly here so bear with me). the gimbal will just go dark ? screen off, no motors running, nothing ? usually about 15 to 20 minutes into a shoot. then like 30 seconds later it powers back on by itself and reconnects fine.

battery is fully charged when this happens, ive tried two different batteries so its probably not that. the power cable from the external supply is a bit old and has a slight kink near the connector which im now wondering about. temps seem fine, its not hot or anything. doesnt seem to happen when its just sitting on a desk powered on, only when its actually working and the motors are active.

i honestly dont know if this is a thermal thing, a power delivery thing, or some firmware bug. havent updated the firmware in a while actually, maybe like 8 months out of date.

that kinked power cable is your problem, almost guarantee it. when the gimbal motors are active theyre drawing real current and a damaged cable will drop voltage just enough to trigger the undervoltage protection and shut the whole unit down. the 30 second recovery is classic ? it sits there, cable resistance drops slightly as no current is flowing, voltage recovers, unit turns back on. replace the cable first before anything else, its the cheapest fix and statistically the most likely cause.

firmware being 8 months old on an RS3 is prety significant tbh, DJI pushed some stability fixes in that time period that specifically addressed motor cutout behavior under load. i had a wierd shutdown issue on mine that turned out to be a known bug they patched. update it first alongside replacing the cable, no point troubleshooting on old firmware because you might just be fighting problems that are already fixed.
