flying in wind ? when do you actually just pack it up and go home

so ive been flying for about two years now and im still not great at reading wind conditions before i go out. like i check the forecast, it says 12mph, i get there and its gusting to 20 and my mini 3 is just getting pushed around everywhere. i landed it fine but it got me thinking ? whats everyones actual threshold for calling it a day before you even launch.

i know the specs say my bird can handle up to 38kph or whatever but thats not really the same as whether you SHOULD fly in that. especially in areas with trees and buildings that create weird turbulence pockets. had a moment last week where it just dropped like 15 feet in a second and my heart stopped. recovered fine but still.

also curious if theres actually a good way to practice flying in wind or if its just one of those things you get better at by doing it. ive heard some people talk about flying in atti mode to build muscle memory but my controller doesnt have that option natively so idk

honestly my rule of thumb is if the sustained wind is over half the rated max wind resistance im landing or not launching at all. gusty conditions are way worse than steady wind though ? a steady 18mph i can work with, gusts to 18 with lulls at 5 is a nightmare because the aircraft is constantly adjusting and you lose feel for whats happening.

for the practice thing, yeah atti mode is good if you can get it but even without it just flying figure eights and trying to maintain a consistent ground track in crosswind will teach you a lot. the key is you start to anticipate the drift instead of reacting to it. takes a while but it clicks eventually. also flying at lower altitudes in wind is usually smoother than you'd think, above the treeline is where it gets spicy

that 15 foot drop sounds like it mighta been a vortex off a building or something, had that happen to me near a parking structure once and it was terrifying. i generally just check windy dot com instead of the regular weather apps, way more granular data and you can see the wind layers at different altitudes which is actually super useful for planning.
