okay so this has been bugging me for a while and i feel like im doing something dumb. been doing residential and light commercial roof inspections with a Mini 3 Pro for the past few months and the clients love the deliverables but im running into a wall when it comes to the actual reporting.

like the footage is fine, i can spot missing shingles, flashing issues, pooling areas on flat roofs, whatever. but getting that into a format that means something to an insurance adjuster or a roofing contractor is where i keep losing time. right now im basically just exporting a video and screenshotting key frames in premiere which feels incredibly dumb.

also wondering if the Mini 3 Pro is even the right tool here or if i should be looking at something with better image quality for close ups. i know people use the Mavic 3 Enterprise for this stuff but the price jump is pretty significant and im still building the client base. do the 4/3 sensor shots from the M3E actually make a meaningfully better deliverable for a roofing contractor vs what the mini outputs? or is it more about the workflow tools that come with the enterprise ecosystem

its almost certainly not a gear problem at your stage. the Mini 3 Pro output is more than adequate for identifying roof defects, any contractor worth working with can read those images fine. the real issue is exactly what you said ? the reporting workflow.

look at something like Roofr or even just a dedicated inspection report template in something like Canva or Google Slides that you set up once and reuse. some guys use Jobber or similar field service tools. the key thing the adjusters and contractors actually want is findings mapped to a rough location on the roof with a timestamp or photo reference, not just a video they have to scrub through themselves. if you give them that you will stand out from like 90% of the drone guys doing this work.

the M3E question is valid but wait until you have enough volume to justify it, the sensor difference is real but its not a dealbreaker at residential scale

ive used both and yeah the 4/3 sensor on the M3E is noticeably better when you're cropping in on specific damage areas but for most roofing work you dont need that level of detail unless you're doing insurance litigation support or something where the image has to hold up to scrutiny. for a standard inspection report the mini is honestly fine and the portability is actually a plus when you're doing 5-6 roofs in a day.

one thing though ? have you tried flying a proper grid pattern instead of just a manual orbit? even on flat sections doing a proper photogrammetry pass and generating an ortho in something like DroneDeploy can make your deliverables look way more professional and it gives you a measurable output rather than just pretty pictures. clients start asking for area calculations and slope measurements pretty quick once they see what you can actually do
